No, it's a great movie
that's on tonight.

Incredible night.

What are you doing?

What do you think?

It's real catchy, Gage. But I
never thought you'd sell that car.

What did it do,
break down on you last night?

No, this is a pretty good car.
Runs pretty good.

I just don't think it's my image,
you know?

Struck out again
last night, huh?

That has nothing to do with it.

What is your image?

Yeah. I didn't know slightly demented
firemen drove a special kind of car.

I picture myself...

I don't know, I picture myself
more in a sports car.

You know, I've been driving
this little thing for 10 years,

and I got to tell you,
it hasn't exactly changed my entire life.

Actually, I've been
thinking of selling the car,

you know, getting something
a little bit more sensible.

Here's a nice little car I can sell
you real cheap. Never been wrecked.

Why don't you guys trade?

Well, it's something I'd have to
think about. Talk to Joanne about it.

I've heard of friendships
been ruined over car deals.

Roy, this is you and me.

I mean, if our friendship
can't handle a thing like this...

I still have to think about it.

Roy, your problem is
is that you think too much.

What you need in life
is a little spontaneity.

I agree, Roy.
It's easy to fall into a rut.

Look, all you have to do is
take the bed out of the back,

put the seat back in
and you got room for the kids.

Now, that's practicality.

Oh, come on, man,
the suspense is k*lling me.

What do you think?

Okay.

You mean... Well,
okay, all right, then...

After the shift we'll
work out the paperwork.

Pink slips. And the pink
slips and all the details.

We'll work it all out.

And the money?

I mean, obviously one of them
is worth more than the other.

[ALARM SOUNDING]

DISPATCHER ON RADIO:
Squad 51. Man unconscious.

2394 University Avenue.

Cross street,
Student Union Way. Time out, 0900.

[SIRENS WAILING]

STANLEY: Squad 51, KMG 365.

He's inside.

Need any help?

No, thanks.

Do you want to lead us in there?

Yeah, right this way.

Hurry it up. He's choking.

[MAN CHOKING]

Watch it. Excuse me.

Excuse me.

You guys want to clear those tables for us,
please? Thank you.

How long has he been choking?

About 10 minutes. We tried,
but we couldn't get it out.

His name's Danny Zimmerman.

Too far back. I'm going
to need the Choke Saver.

What is this stuff?

Look, we got a man
in trouble here.

It's raw liver.

They made us eat it.
Blindfolded.

Yeah, you know the old joke.
We told them it was a live squid.

I told you it was a dumb idea.

Oh, so now it's all my fault.

Like you were upstairs
hitting the books.

Got it.

Danny's going to make it,
isn't he?

I don't know. Ten minutes
is an awfully long time.

Rampart, this is Squad 51.

Go ahead, 51.

We have a male victim
here. About how old is he?

He's about 18.

We got a male victim here, approximately

He's been out for about 10 minutes,
but we've cleared the airway.

What's his vital signs?

Blood pressure is 70 over 0, the
pulse is 120, respiration's very shallow.

Roy, he stopped breathing.

[SIRENS WAILING]

DISPATCHER ON RADIO:

toxic chemicals are stored
in a tanker.

Use caution.

KELLY ON RADIO: Squad 51,
this is Rampart. Can you send me some EKG?

JOHNNY ON RADIO:

We're sending you a strip.
Vitals to follow.

Pulse is 160. The victim
is in extreme pain, Rampart.

[INTERCOM BEEPING]

This patient is in V-fib.

Rampart, we have lost the
victim's pulse. Beginning CPR.

[RAPID BEEPING]

We're defibrillating victim,
Rampart.

Rampart, we've defibrillated
victim. Decent sinus rhythm.

JOE ON RADIO: Administer 2 amps
sodium bicarb and insert an airway.

KELLY ON RADIO: Start an IV,

DIXIE: Squad 51, continue monitoring
Vitals and transport immediately.

JOHNNY ON RADIO:
We're on our way, Rampart.

ROY: The victim's stopped
breathing. Rampart, stand by.

insert esophageal airway.

[SIREN WAILING]

Ambulance is here.

If this ever gets out,
my old man's gonna k*ll me.

[VENTILATING]

All right, he's got
a good carotid.

Rampart. We're ventilating,
and the victim has a good carotid.

IV D5W and recheck his vitals.

Come on, Danny,
hang in there. Show them what you can do!

Okay. He's breathing on his own.

Rampart, victim is
breathing on his own.

The blood pressure is 100 over 50, the
pulse is 90, and the skin color is pinking.

That's good, 51.
What's your ETA?

About 15 minutes.

Okay,

All right.

Got him? Go.

I'll follow you in. All right.

Excuse me. Uh-huh?

Listen, this thing doesn't need
to be officially reported, does it?

Yeah, I mean, why bother the dean's
office? He's got his own problems.

Now, there's an officer
right over there.

Why don't you talk to him
about it, all right?

But, Mr. O'Brien, 3:00 to 11:00
Saturday is our busiest shift.

Well, yes, I know all about
your budget. I know, but...

Yes, Mr. O'Brien,
I know all about "proper channels."

All right,
that's just what I'll do.

[SLAMS PHONE DOWN]

O'Brien, our new administrator.

Wants to cut back the nurses
on our busiest shift.

"Budget," he says!

Well, you can't fight city hall.

Can you?

Well, you just watch me!

He wants to save money, does he?

Well, I'll be glad to give him a few ideas,
free of charge!

Starting with his department.

Don't tell me. Dixie and The
Man Upstairs are going at it again.

You got it! Only this
time it's all-out w*r.

Put him in Room 3.

How's he doing?

Well, he's still unconscious,
but he's breathing on his own.

You're not really going to send this thing,
are you, Dix?

You bet I am. Our new administrator
wants to shape up procedures,

he can just do it right.

Well, do you know O'Brien?

No, but I've talked to him on the phone,
and that's plenty.

Well, remind me
never to cross you, Dix.

Excuse me, miss. We're Danny's
parents. Danny Zimmerman?

The police just called us.

If you'll have a seat,
the doctor's with your son now.

My boy! I want to see him.

Come on now,
come on. Let's go this way. Come on.

[SOBBING] On the couch.

Over here. Sit down.

I know this is a shock, but
Dr. Morton's doing everything that he can.

He was such a good boy,
such a good boy! I know.

We told him he didn't
belong to those fraternities,

but what can you do?

Who should anyone do
anything so crazy? Not today.

And for what? For what?

He was so shy. He
didn't have any friends.

He just wanted to
belong somewhere.

Oh, why? Why Danny?

Come on, it's going to be all
right. Danny is going to be all right.

Come on.

You are going to be all right.

Kind of have a small engine,
isn't it?

But tough. It's a
tough little engine.

The engine's in the back.

I know where the engine is.
Just looking at your trunk.

I know where the engine is.

There's a little tab in there
you pull to lift it up.

This one? Yeah.

Pretty well-made
piece of machinery, huh?

No, the other way.

When did you have this
thing overhauled last?

Couple thousand miles ago.

Yeah?

Huh.

No...

Well, I guess I should have
my mechanic take a look at it.

Well, I doubt if your mechanic would
know how to work on one of those cars.

Why? Because it was made
before he was born?

Because it's a classic.

That car's going to do
nothing but go up in value.

Yeah, if it doesn't
fall apart first.

[GROANS]

It's kind of cramped for space,
isn't it?

There's not one inch
of wasted space.

Everything is built
for speed and handling.

Oh, yeah.

All right,
your horn doesn't work.

Because the key is off.

Oh.

Well, what do you think?

Honestly?

Yeah, honestly.

I like it.

Yeah? Yeah.

Even trade?

Even trade.

All right.

Even trade, huh?

BOTH: Right.

You know what, Gage?
You got taken.

There you go, Jimmy.

The next time you slide into home plate,
try it feet first, okay?

Yeah, especially since
I got tagged out anyway.

Well, as they say,
you can't win them all.

[HICCUPS]

I got the hiccups.

Try holding your breath, Joe.

[BREATHES DEEPLY]

Try soda pop.
It works all the time.

Here, breathe into this.

It's not working, Dix.
You got any other ideas?

I'll go check with Kel.

I told you, Doc.
Try some soda pop.

That sounds pretty bad.

It could be serious, you know. I once
had a patient that had it for three days.

Is that right? That's right.

Look, will you guys stop
gabbing and do something for me?

DIXIE: Boy,
he sure gets cranky, doesn't he?

Joe, cover your nose.

Blow.

No, again.

Looks just like an elephant.

I told him to try some soda pop.

No, Joe, try this.

What next?

Well, we could try
some chlorpromazine on him.

No, no, no,
no way. You're not going to do that to me.

Here, drink this, Doc.

It worked.

I told you it'd work,
but nobody would listen.

Just like grownups.

Well, so much
for medical school.

Any word yet from upstairs
on your poison-pen memo?

I'm still here, aren't I?

Have you heard from
The Man Upstairs yet?

What is it with everybody?

Well,
all I know is what my friend Mary tells me.

You know, the filing clerk
in O'Brien's office?

Yeah.

Well, he got your little memo, all right.
Yesterday. And was pretty steamed.

Good. Now we're even.

[PHONE RINGING]

Nurse McCall. Right away.

Dr. Early needs you in Room 3.

Oh, but my coffee break.

I'm sorry, Carol,
but thanks to that new schedule,

I'm just in an awful bind.

Well, that's just great.

Miss McCall?

One moment, please.

WOMAN ON PA:
Dr. Jackson, Treatment Room 1.

Dr. Jackson, Treatment Room 1.

Yes, may I help you?

I'm Nathan O'Brien,
the new administrator.

Mr. O'Brien.

I got your memo yesterday.

Uh-huh... Memo.

Needless to say,
I've been giving it quite a bit of thought.

Well, sometimes I do
get a little tactless...

It's my Irish side.
I don't mean...

You do have a way
of turning a phrase.

Oh, you noticed.

Oh, yes, but then
I began thinking.

All you were doing was
speaking from years of experience.

That's very nice of you
to say. Very nice.

Naturally, it's going to cost
you your job here in Emergency.

Oh, really?

Well, you can
take this job and...

Oh. Hold it.

All I'm trying to say is I'd
like for you to move upstairs

and take over
as Nursing Supervisor.

Effective immediately.

Nursing Supervisor?

It's yours if you want it.

This would be your office.

Very nice.

Well, it's only commensurate
with the responsibilities.

I told you it would
be quite a jump.

A jump?

Sit down. Try it out.

Okay, I'd love to.

Naturally, there'd be a
considerable adjustment in pay,

again in keeping with the
wide range of responsibilities.

Forget money! I've never even
had my own window before.

What about it, Dixie?
I know you can do it.

I don't know.
I like working in Emergency.

I like the people I work with.

Tell you what. Why don't you think
it over without me twisting your arm?

Fair enough?

Fair enough.

Fine.

I'd like your answer
this afternoon.

[DOOR CLOSES]

Look, why don't we trade cars
at the end of the shift?

We can save the
paper work till later.

Well, wait a minute, Roy, I...

Listen, I've been thinking,
now we haven't really finalized it yet.

What are you trying to do,
welch on the deal, Gage?

What deal? I didn't make a deal.

I mean, we didn't shake hands.

If we had have
shook hands, we'd...

All right, now, wait a minute. Look,
I'm sure something can be worked out.

I mean, all it needs
is just a little adjustment...

It's okay. It's all right.

You want to forget about the
whole deal. That's fine with me.

We'll just forget about it. It's
better than having bad feelings.

Hold it, wait a minute. Chet,
did you hear Johnny agree to the trade?

I cannot tell a lie, Cap. I heard it
all. The deal was consummated.

And a deal's a deal.

Well, John, there you go.

[STAMMERING]
But what he heard is...

I mean, I didn't really...
I mean, he didn't really...

[sums]

Okay, fine. Fine.
A deal's a deal.

Good man, Gage. I admire a guy
who takes the short end of the stick,

like a true gentleman.

I didn't take the short...
I mean, I made a good deal.

Look, I know what
you're trying to do.

You're trying to
make me feel rotten.

But I know it,
so it's not gonna work.

Untrue, Gage. Now,
I have an uncle that's a mechanic,

and he says after a while
a car just gives up.

Now, you got one that's 10
years older than Roy's, right?

Congratulations, Roy.

Yeah, well...

I got a classic.

So donate it to a museum.

A deal's a deal.

Don't look at me, pal.
My wife drives an Edsel.

[ALARM SOUNDING]

DISPATCHER: Station 51,
man trapped in vehicle

in the parking lot
at 7525 Warren Boulevard.

Cross street, 4th Avenue.

7525 Warren Boulevard.

Time out, 1345.

Station 51, KMG 365.

[SIRENS WAILING]

[HORN BLARING]

Over here!

JOHNNY: Are you hurt, ma'am?

No, it's not me, it's him.

Are you hurt, sir?

You won't believe this,
but I can't get out of my car.

I just barely scratched his door,
but it won't open.

You wanna move that car back for us,
please?

Sure. Thank you.

Well, you think maybe you
can get out the other door?

I don't bend in enough places.

Oh.

Well, I think maybe I can
get it open with the claw trunk.

Hey, you guys aren't gonna
damage my door, are you?

I'm afraid it's already damaged.

Yeah, I guess so.

[GROANS]

ROY: What's wrong?

[sums]

When I saw her coming,
I went for the brake.

My knee hit the steering wheel.

Let me come back over there
and take a look at that leg, huh?

Let me in here, I'll help.

Thank you.

Now, let's see.

Can you bend this leg at all?

No.

Now, we better immobilize
this knee. It might be fractured.

Hey, man, don't say that. I
play basketball for a living.

Look, we put a splint on this leg,
it will save it

from further damage when
we're trying to get you out, all right?

Okay, I'll be right back. I'm
gonna go get some equipment.

Say, man, that's gonna
tear my car in half.

No, listen,

I can't tell you how
delicate I am with this tool.

I'm just like a surgeon
with it. There we go, see?

No problems with it at all.

All righty,
I've got a splint here.

Can you lift up for me? Maybe
straighten this knee out a bit?

Here we are. That's good,
thank you.

All right, why don't you give me that
strap there and you start sucking this...

Right.

Heck of a thing to do
for a living, isn't it?

Yeah, tell me about it.

That's it, that's good,
that's good, right there.

Okay.

Okay. All right.

Let's see now. Let's try to
get your leg out this way.

Can you get it out this way?

All right.

Now, what do you think? Oh,
you're jammed in there, aren't you?

Well, I don't know
what to do. Cap?

Well, I'm open to suggestions.

Well, listen, he's already
halfway out this sunroof.

Why don't we just keep him
going in that direction,

and then once we get him so high,
we can turn him to the left a little bit,

and then get him on
out the door this way?

All right. Wanna try it?

Wait a minute, now.

Got him?

Okay, you think
you can get his legs out?

I'm gonna get the Biophone.

All right.

Rampart, this is Squad 51.

Go ahead, 51.

We have a male victim here,
approximately 27 years old.

He was trapped in a car,
possible fracture to the knee.

We've already immobilized.

The vital signs are,
respiration is 16, the pulse is 68.

Immobilize the injury
and transport.

Can you get it in there?

He isn't gonna
fit on the gurney.

Yeah, he'll fit.

Just push this down and
I'll just hang over the edge.

Okay, just let your
feet hang over?

Yeah. All right.

Got it?

Which half of him do I cover?

Just cover, just cover.

Can you scoot down a little bit?

He's gonna have to
scoot down a little bit.

ROY: I'll go in with him, okay?

JOHNNY: Okay.

He's not gonna
fit in the ambulance!

All you got to do
is just turn me around

so that my feet point
this way. It'll be all right.

All right, bring him out,
let's turn him around.

Got him?

All right.

Well...

Say, man. Yeah.

Say, do me a favor, man.

Why don't you move my car in the shade,
will you?

Yeah, you got it.

I always wanted to
drive one of these things.

[SIREN WAILING]

I can't reach the foot pedals.

Well, get out and we'll push.

Well, somebody's got to steer.

You know what? You're right.

Where's some shade?

Wait a minute.

Okay, go.

Hey, Dix, honestly,
I couldn't be happier for you.

Yeah, same here. You know,
you got to give O'Brien credit.

He sure knows where
to come to pick the talent.

And we kind of have
mixed emotions.

We like you to get the promotion,
but we'd like you to stay here, too.

I told you, nothing's definite.

You know, I still have
to make up my mind.

That's really going
to be a tough decision.

Well, it is. Maybe I like
things the way they are.

Oh, yeah? You don't happen to
have a copy of that memo, do you?

Listen, will you get out of
here so I can hear myself think?

Hi, Doc. Hi.

What about that
basketball player?

Oh, it was just a bruise.
He was lucky.

Oh, speaking of luck,
looks like Dixie's going to be leaving us.

I didn't say that.

Yeah, didn't you guys hear?
The word just came down.

They want Dix to be the
new Nursing Supervisor.

Oh, that's fantastic.

Yeah, well, that's great.
You gonna do it?

I don't know, I suppose so.

It's really tempting.

You better hurry and decide.

Oh, yeah, what time is it?

It's time for me to go to work.

Yeah, me, too.

Us, too. So long.

Oh, and Dix, remember to throw us
peasants a few crumbs now and then.

WOMAN ON PA:
Calling Dr. Alex Lopez.

Calling Dr. Alex Lopez.

Well, did I interrupt anything?

Oh, no,
just a full-scale meeting.

About you and the job offer?

Uh-huh.

And what did everybody decide?

That I should take it.

And you?
What do you feel about it?

Do you really
have to know today?

Unfortunately.

I have to make a report to the
Board of Directors in exactly one hour.

Excuse me for a minute.

HI. DIXIE: Hi.

Looks like the patient
isn't a patient anymore.

We're taking Danny home.

We just wanted to say thank you.

For everything.

My folks told me that
if it wasn't for you,

they really would've
fallen apart.

You know,
after you brought me in.

Oh, don't be silly,
I was just doing my job.

To you, maybe, but to us,
we know "special" when we see it.

For you, some chocolate chips.

What Danny calls
"doing my thing."

For you. Thank you.

Bye. Bye-bye.

Bye. Bye.

I'm sorry, where was I?

I think you were going
to make a decision.

Oh, yeah.

Well, the answer is no.

Why?

I guess I like it where I am.

I didn't realize how much.

I think I understand.

Besides, I wouldn't wish
this job on anybody.

DIXIE: Room 1. Frank.

[TELEPHONE RINGING]

ROY: Hello?

Oh, yes.

Yeah, Joanne. Look, I haven't
talked to him yet. I just got here.

Yeah, I know. Huh?

Yeah, I know.

I agree with you.

It's not going to be any problem,
it's not going to be any problem at all.

All right.

I'll let you know
as soon as I know.

Yeah, okay... Yeah.

Yeah, okay, all right, bye-bye.

Good morning, John.

Oh, morning, Chet.

Hey, I'm surprised that new car of
yours got you in work on time, pal.

Or did you take a bus?

Chet, that car happens
to run like a top.

Sure it does.

You know something, Chet,
let me tell you something about that car.

I love that car. That car's the best
thing that ever happened to me.

It really is.

Let me cite you an example.

This morning,
for the first time,

there was a young lady
who waved at me.

Now, I've seen her on
the same corner for years.

She's never waved at me before.

I think it's highly coincidental

that she waved at me and I happen
to be driving in the little sports car.

CHET: Maybe she thought
you were Roy.

Joanne, I think we've
got a little problem.

Yeah. Yeah,
it seems that Johnny...

[ALARM SOUNDING]

Talk to you later.

DISPATCHER: Station 51,
Engine 2, Boat 2.

Vehicle accident with injuries on
the Nathan B. LeMay Drawbridge.

Time out, 0810.

STANLEY: Station 51, KMG 365.

[SIREN WAILING]

[HORN BLARING]

[HORN BLARING]

[WHISTLE BLOWING]

You guys are really gonna have
to take it easy while you're working.

Don't want to shake anything.

Looks like we got
a little problem.

POLICE OFFICER:
Can you believe it?

STANLEY: That thing's
hanging by a hair up there.

It's like a seesaw.
POLICE OFFICER: Take a look.

The driver's still up there?

I don't know. As far as I can tell,
I guess so.

Anybody up there with him?

I just saw the driver and I didn't get
a good look. He was going by so fast.

Why did he have
to cross my bridge?

Don't see any signs
of movement up there.

What exactly happened?

Search me. My signal lights and
my restraining gate were working.

All of a sudden this hotrod comes
roaring in from out of nowhere.

It must've been going around

I tried to hit the brake,
but he had too much momentum.

He probably thought
he could make it.

Yeah, or just robbed a bank.

Either way, he was doing 60
if he was doing a mile.

Well, I ran a wire
on the plates. Negative.

Anyway we can get that
down there nice and easy?

Are you kidding? The way
this old lady bumps and grinds?

You're looking at
a good 65, 70-degree slope.

Well, there's no getting
an aerial ladder up there,

not with all those overhangs.

Looks like only one
other alternative. Ropes.

Roy, you and John go
on up the west side.

Mike, you and Chet take a second
line up the east side there, okay?

STANLEY: Engine 2, Engine 51,
stand by to receive a lifeline.

Let me know when
you have it secured.

Engine 2, 10-4.

Let's go, Marco.

Marco, get the life g*n,
we'll get the line.

Okay, Mike.

MAN: LA Boat 2,
we're at the scene of 51's incident.

We have a diver aboard,
and standing by.

STANLEY.' Boat 2.

You guys all set?

ROY: Yeah.

How about you? You sure
this thing is in a lock position?

Positive. I just double-checked.

All right.

We'll drop a line down
if we need a Stokes.

Fine.

Engine 51, Engine 2,
we're in position to receive lifeline.

Yeah, 10-4.

Ready to fire, Marco.

Engine 2, it's on its way.

All right.

Yup-Set?

Oh, boy! Look at that!

JOHNNY: Hung up
on the undercarriage.

JOHNNY: Are you all right?

WOMAN: Hurry, please.

JOHNNY: All right.
We'll be right there.

Okay, Johnny, throw us the line.

Okay, we got it.

Okay.

All right, the line's secure.
Why don't I just go on across?

Can you secure for me? Yeah.

Okay.

All right, hold on.

You Okay?

WOMAN: I'm afraid to move.

You think maybe
you can slide over...

Roy! Roy! ROY: Got it.

Can you pull down on it?

Yeah, here.

It's got to go further back.

All right.

All right, hang on in there.
Just be still, okay?

WOMAN: Okay.

Are you okay? Just be still.

[WOMAN WHIMPERING]

All right.

JOHNNY: It's still going,
it's still going down.

CHET: You guys okay?

Yeah!

Sit back, all right,
as far back as you can get.

All right, now just sit back.
All right, I got it.

JOHNNY: Can you lean back?

We're going to get
a lifeline on you, all right?

All right, now we are going to get
this lifeline around you, all right?

Slide her under. There we go.

Move up just a tiny bit.
All right.

ROY: Be careful,
this thing could go out any minute.

JOHNNY: Okay.

JOHNNY: Buckle this,
yeah, all right.

There you go.

All right, now,
just slide over easy,

just slide over easy,
okay, yeah.

ROY: I'm ready over here.
All right.

Just swing your legs out,
just swing your legs out.

All right, just walk
on over to here.

Here we go, here we go.

WOMAN: Hold on to me.

I got you. All right.

CHET: You got her?

Got her. All right.

There. Put your arm around me.

Okay, let me get hold of her.

All right, just move back easy.

All right, I'm behind you.

Don't worry about it,
we got you.

WOMAN: We're slipping,
we're slipping. Hold on.

Okay. All right.

All right, just step over this.

Yeah, you're just gonna have
to step across. Okay, here we go.

Now, take it easy.
Please hold me.

Okay, I got her, I got her.

All right, step over.
There we go.

Attagirl, attagirl.

I got you,
don't worry about it, I got you.

WOMAN: I'm so sorry.

It's my grandson's car.
It's so fast.

It's all right.

We'll be back down there
in just a second.

WOMAN: I'm so sorry.

Look, don't worry
about your car.

We'll secure it
before we lower the bridge.

WOMAN: Oh, careful.

Don't worry,
we're strapped in here real snug.

ROY: All right,
we're almost there.

WOMAN: You men are so
wonderful. I thought I was dead.

ROY: Okay, we got a big step here,
so be careful.

Okay, there we are.

Engine 2, Boat 2,
rescue completed. You're released.

Boat 2.

BOAT 2: Engine 2, 10-4.

Second thoughts? No.

I just thought I'd forgot to say
goodbye to her, you know, last shift.

Yeah, isn't it something how you can
form an attachment to a piece of machinery?

Yeah.

Doesn't make any
sense, you know.

That car of yours is much
more practical than this one.

Yeah, well,
that car's a classic.

[sums]

What are you thinking?

Honestly?

Yeah, honestly.

This is exactly what I want.

This is exactly what I want.

Even trade?

Even trade.

All right.

Even trade, huh?

BOTH: Right.
