Aren't you forgetting
something?

OLIVE: Aw Mom, it
takes forever...

to put all those
winter clothes on.

OLIVE'S MOM: True,
it takes more time,

but you know it's
cold outside.

ELINOR: It's okay, Olive.

We'll wait for you.

Right, Ari?

ARI: Huh?

Oh, uh... yeah.

Sure we will!

OLIVE'S MOM: Come,
come now, Olive.

I bet if we work together we
can get you ready...

lambs tail.

they do that.

a lot of them.

ELINOR: That's okay, Olive.

ELINOR: Yay!

OLIVE: Wait up Elinor.

ELINOR: Olive?

What's wrong?

OLIVE: I...

I have to go to
the bathroom.

ARI: [sigh]

OLIVE: Okay, I'm ready.

ARI: Woo-hoo!

ELINOR: C'mon!

ELINOR: Yay!

ELINOR: [laughs] Oh,
this snow is perfect!

Are you thinking
what I'm thinking?

ELINOR: Snow Birds!
OLIVE: Snow Birds!

ELINOR: [giggling]

ELINOR: Ready to look at our
Snow Birds, Olive?

OLIVE: Ready!

ELINOR: Oooh...
So pretty!

OLIVE: [efforts]

Uh... Help?

ELINOR: Huh!

I'm coming Olive!

OLIVE: [giggles]

[sigh] My Snow Bird looks
more like a snow-jellyfish!

I wish my winter clothes
weren't so big and puffy.

ARI:Look out below!

ELINOR: [gasp]
OLIVE: Huh?!

ARI: Whoooooaa!

How do you steer
this thing?!

Whoooooaaaa!

ELINOR: Ari!

ARI: [efforts]

I think I'm stuck.

ELINOR: [giggles]
Are you okay?

ARI: I'm okay!

But yeaaaah....

That didn't go
exactly as planned.

I'm gonna try it again.
Wanna come? [giggle]

ELINOR: Come on, Olive.

Let's go sledding!

OLIVE: Wait up, Elinor!

I'm [panting]...

ELINOR: Uh oh.

ELINOR: Are you
ok, Olive??

OLIVE: Yeah.

I wish I didn't have to wear
all these winter clothes,

they're so puffy it's
hard to move.

MARY / LIZZIE: [laughter]

OLIVE: Hmmm...

you come saucer sledding?

ELINOR: You got really
cold out there, Olive.

How come I have to wear big,
puffy winter clothes...

when I go outside?

ELINOR: Other kids
wear them too.

Look at Bodie.

He's wearing a
full snowsuit.

ROLLIE: [laughter]

ELINOR: And so is Rollie.

OLIVE: Hmm...

OLIVE:But Javier isn't
wearing a thick jacket.

And neither are
Mary or Lizzie.

ELINOR: Some of our friends are
wearing lots of winter clothes,

and some aren't.

That is so interesting!

OLIVE: I wonder
why that is?

ELINOR: I don't know.

Wait, I have an idea.

Let's go back outside
and find out.

OLIVE: Uh, I think
I'll stay inside.

ELINOR: Okay,
you stay here.

We need more observations!

ELINOR:♪ There's no
time like snow time ♪

♪ When winter time
is here. ♪

♪Sliding, gliding,
snowball fun,♪

♪What a time of year.♪

♪But when the
snow has fallen, ♪

♪And the lake
has froze,♪

♪Different animals
seem to wear,♪

♪ Different kinds
of clothes. ♪

ELINOR: ♪Some wear
cozy snowsuits, ♪

♪ With scarves and
mitts and hats. ♪

ELINOR: ♪Others wear
their normal clothes, ♪

♪ Like goats and beavers

ARI: ♪And bats! Ahhh! ♪

ELINOR / ARI: ♪There's no
time like snow time, ♪

♪when winter
time is here.♪

♪Saucer sledding, so
much fun!♪

Woo-hoo!

ELINOR: [sigh]

OLIVE: Well, did
you find anything out?

ELINOR: Yes and no.

Some of us wear lots
of winter clothes.

And some of us wear hardly
any winter clothes at all.

OLIVE: Hmm, I know!

Let's make a chart so we
can see what's the same...

and what's different.

OLIVE: Wearing lots of

ELINOR: Let's see...

Bodie and Rollie are

ARI: This saucer sled
is awesome!

But kinda hard to
control.

What are you
guys doing?

ELINOR: We're trying to figure
out why Olive got so cold.

OLIVE: Yeah, some of us need
lots of winter clothes,

and some of us don't!

ARI: Well, you
can put me in the...

not-so-many winter
clothes category.

I like to let
my fur fly free!

ELINOR: But we still
don't know why...

Wait! Fur!

Ari, you have fur!

ARI: You bet I do!

ELINOR: And I have fur too!

ELINOR: And I don't
need winter clothes...

to stay warm in the snow.

OLIVE: But I do!

And I don't have fur.

Look!

ELINOR: That's it!

Our friends that
don't have fur...

need winter clothes
to stay warm.

Like Bodie and Rollie...

OLIVE: And me!

But our friends that
do have fur...

don't need a lot of
winter clothes.

ELINOR: That's amazing!

Having fur keeps you warm.

It's like having your own
built-in snowsuit!

ARI: Yeah!

OLIVE: That's it!
We figured it out!

ELINOR: Yes!!

OLIVE: [giggle]

OLIVE: [sigh] I wish
I had fur like you guys,

so I didn't have to wear
all those wintery clothes.

ARI: Well, I wish I had
a trunk like you,

so I could do that thing that
you and your Mom do.

OLIVE: You mean this?

[trumpets]

ARI: [laughs]
Yeah, I love that.

OLIVE: I guess we're
all just different,

and since I don't
have fur...

I guess I have to wear my
winter clothes to stay warm.

OLIVE: What are
we waiting for?

Let's get outside
before the snow melts!

ELINOR: Yay!
ARI: Wahoo!
OLIVE: [trumpets]

[♪♪]

OLIVE / ELINOR: Whoaa!

ARI: [giggles]

ELINOR: Nice
and warm, Olive?

OLIVE: Yeah!

ARI: Are you
guys sure?

I still don't know how
to steer this thing.

OLIVE: You don't have to.

My snow clothes keep me warm and
they make a path in the snow!

MZ. MOLE: Brrrr!
It's so cold out today!

Let's warm up with a nice cup of
hot cocoa and a story!

KIDS: [cheer]
ARI: Oh yeah!!!

ELINOR: What's today's
story, Mz. Mole?

MZ. MOLE: Today's story is
all about staying warm!

But our story starts in a
very cold place.

Way up in the north,

only a few animals
can stay warm.

The polar bear has
a very thick coat of fur...

to stay warm!

OLIVE: One of my friends
is a polar bear!

When she visits, she doesn't
even wear a jacket outside!

MZ. MOLE: That's right!

MZ. MOLE:Polar bears have thick
coats of fur on their skin...

that let them stay
warm on the ice.

MZ. MOLE:Or even when they
swim in the freezing waters!

ELINOR: Mz. Mole, why are
polar bears always white?

MZ. MOLE: Good question!

Polar bears have white fur so
they can hide in the snow!

ELINOR:You can
hardly see him!

MZ. MOLE:But that's not even
the most amazing thing...

about polar bears!

MZ. MOLE:Do you know what
color a polar bear's skin is...

underneath all that fur?

ARI: Is it white too?
ELINOR: I'm pink under my fur.

MZ. MOLE: If you
look closely,

a polar bear's skin is actually
black underneath the fur!

MZ. MOLE:The thick white fur
keeps them cozy in the snow,

and the black skin underneath
helps them soak up...

the warm light from the sun.

MZ. MOLE: It's a good thing
polar bears have such special...

fur and skin!

You won't find a mole like me
swimming in freezing water!

[laughs]

[♪♪]

ELINOR: "The Seed of an Idea"

ELINOR: [giggle] Hi!

[giggle]

[velcro sound]
ELINOR: Huh?

[velcro sound]

ELINOR: Hmmm.

[velcro sound]

ELINOR: Ooooh.

OLIVE:Hi, Elinor!

You look extra
curious today!

ELINOR: Hi, Olive!
Hi, Ari!

ARI: Good Morning Elinor!

Are you curious to see
something cool?

Check this out!

ARI: I have a new watch!

ELINOR: Ooohh...

OLIVE: He's been showing it to
everyone this morning.

ALL: [giggle]

ARI: My parents
got it for me.

They said it's to help
me stay on track.

Waaatch this!

WATCH ALARM:Time to go
to school!

ELINOR: [giggle]

WATCH ALARM:Eat
your vegetables!

ELINOR: Ohhh.

WATCH ALARM:Put your pants on!

ELINOR: Oh!

ARI: Hey, sometimes

ALL: [laughter]

MZ. MOLE: Ok, class,
time to find our places!

ALL: [giggle]

KIDS: Good morning,

MZ. MOLE: Good morning!

MZ. MOLE: Ah ha!

ELINOR: Hmmm...

MZ. MOLE: Nature has solved
a lot of different kinds..

of problems and is full
of useful ideas.

MZ. MOLE: For example...

ELINOR: [giggle]

MZ. MOLE: Ahem...

MZ. MOLE: Nature is full of
useful ideas, like...

ELINOR: HmmMmm...

MZ. MOLE: Nature is full

ELINOR: Mz. Mole!!
This strap is sooo cool!

ELINOR: You can open
it and close it...

close it.

ELINOR: Most of it is
soft and fuzzy,

except for this
scratchy patch...

ELINOR: which sticks to the
fuzzy part of the strap.

The two parts stick
together like tape,

but they aren't sticky!

KIDS: Oooohhh...

ELINOR: That is
so interesting!

And look!

There's a patch like that
on all sorts of things!

ARI: Whoa! Whoooa, whoooooa!

ELINOR: It keeps
Ashley's boots closed.

ELINOR: It keeps Mehdi's
backpack closed.

ELINOR: And it's
on Javier's coat!

OLIVE: You're right,
it's on everything!

ARI: Oof!
[laughter]

ELINOR: But I never
thought about it before.

I wonder how it works?

MZ. MOLE: Well Elinor...

WATCH ALARM:Time for recess!
Time for recess!

MZ. MOLE: Ah, yes.

Thank you, Ari's watch!

It's time for recess!

KIDS: [cheer]
Yeah, recess!

ELINOR: Hmm....
How does this work?

How does this scratchy patch
stick to the fuzzy side...

without being sticky?

OLIVE: Dun dun dun,
sounds like a mystery.

I'll see if we have
any books about it!

ARI: What about
going to recess?

ELINOR: And look, the patch
also sticks to other things!

ARI: Hey!

ELINOR: [sigh] But it doesn't
stick to everything.

ARI: Huh... that
is interesting.

OLIVE: Well, I found
some fun books,

but none about mysterious
scratchy patches...

that stick to things.

ARI: ...or don't
stick to things!

Let's try sticking the patch
to a lot of things,

and see what it does
and doesn't stick to.

us how it works.

OLIVE: I'll write it down!

Ari's sweater and the rug,

and... nothing else?

ELINOR: Hmm...

ARI: Le's try some
things outside?

ELINOR: Yeah, good idea!

ARI: We're going outside!

KIDS: [cheer]
Recess! Yay!

ELINOR: Ooh, let's
try that tree!

KIDS: [giggle]

ELINOR: Tree... no.

KIDS: Hmmm....

ELINOR: We need
more observations!

ELINOR: Let's go!

ALL: [singing] ♪We want
to solve the mystery, ♪

♪of how this sticks
so stickily.♪

♪We're going to try
it here..♪

[birds chirping tune]

OLIVE: Ok, the scratchy patch
sticks to sweaters and rugs,

but not anything else.

ELINOR: Hmm, I don't
see how it works.

Do you guys?

OLIVE: Uh-uh

ARI: Nope. It's such a
sticky mystery!

ARI: Ack! What's this?
Yaaa....

ARI: These seeds
won't come off!

ELINOR: Oh...
OLIVE: [laughs]

ARI: [panting]

ELINOR: Oooohhh...

ARI: Phew! Thanks!

ARI: Hey!

ELINOR: Look, this seed sticks
to Ari's sweater...

just like the
scratchy patch!

It even makes
the same sound!

I wonder...

OLIVE: The seed also sticks to

ELINOR: What is this
little seed?

ARI: Look at all those little
hooks.

the seed stick to the sweater?

It looks like
the little hooks...

grab the fuzziness
of the sweater.

ARIL: Hmmm...

ARI: The patch on the strap
also has little hooks!

OLIVE: They're even tinier.

I hadn't seen them before!

ELINOR: Hmm...

Let's take a closer look
at the strap again.

ARI: Oooh, I get it.

ELINOR: That's how it works!

It's the tiny little hooks
that make the patch sticky.

ELINOR: But the hooks need
something fuzzy...

with little loops to
grab on to.

OLIVE: Yeah!

That's why the patch only sticks
to these fuzzy things,

and not to these other
things that aren't fuzzy.

These things don't have little
loops for the hooks to grab!

ARI: We solved
the mystery!

ELINOR: Let's tell
Mz. Mole!

ELINOR: Yay! Yay! Yay!
Let's go!

[giggles]

ELINOR: Yay!

ARI: Woohoo!!

KIDS: [cheering]

ELINOR: Mz. Mole,
we figured it out!

OLIVE: It's the little hooks
on the patch...

ARI: That make the
strap stick together!

ELINOR: But the hooks only stick
to things that are fuzzy...

and have little
loops in them.

ELINOR: The hooks on the patch
grab loops on the fuzzy part...

and stick together!

And then...

skrrrrtch!

MZ. MOLE: [sniffs] My, I smell
some clever little scientists.

I knew you would
figure it out!

ELINOR: We figured it out from
looking at this spiky seed.

MZ. MOLE: Hmmm... yes, that's
the seed in my book.

The strap and the seed
work the same way.

Why do you
think that is?

ARI: [gasp] Did the seed copy
the idea from the watch strap?

OLIVE: I think that
would be silly...

Wouldn't it?

ELINOR: I bet the idea for the
strap came from the seeds!

MZ. MOLE: That's right!

MZ. MOLE: Georges de
Mistral was an inventor...

who lived a long
time ago.

He loved to go for
walks in the woods,

but always came back
with some seeds...

stuck to his
fur and clothes.

ELINOR: It's the same
seeds we found!

MZ. MOLE: That's right!

The seed has little hooks so
it can grab on to things

and grow in
different places.

MZ. MOLE: George wondered if
he could use the same idea...

and make the hooks
and loops himself.

That way, he could get
things to stick together.

ELINOR: Wow.

Nature really does have
some good ideas, Mz. Mole.

I'm glad we went
to explore.
