♪ Wild Kratts!

Chris: On the continent of North America,

in the temperate habitats of the great north.

We're here in owl country.

It's us, the Kratt Brothers!

I'm Chris!

Martin: And I'm Martin!

And almost everywhere is owl country,

because owls live on every continent

in the creature world, except Antarctica.

Chris: There are about different species of owl.

Let's check out a few of them.

Martin: Like the northern hawk owl,

who hunts mostly during the day.

And the snowy owl from the Arctic tundra.

Or this guy, a screech owl.

One of the smallest owls in North America.

And look, staying still and being the color of the bark

is a perfect camouflage.

They'll sit motionless all day long,

waiting for night to fall,

so they can go hunting.

♪♪

Chris: This is a barn owl.

They live all around the world

and they're masters of sound.

Their feathers have fluff and it's almost like a muffler,

so that when they fly, there's no sound at all.

[whispers] Whoo.

Martin: Meet the barn owl.

Oh, and that round face--

that's called a facial disc.

It helps collect sound waves for the owl's hearing.

I love the look of the barn owl's face.

Chris: This is a great horned owl.

A fierce hunter of the night

and a top predator in North America.

They are designed for hunting and they hunt big prey.

Everything up from a little mouse,

all the way up to rabbits, skunks and even geese.

They are powerful.

Imagine if we could creature adventure

with the owls of the world.

Martin: Imagine if we had owl power!

Martin/Chris: What if?

Chris: Owl Odyssey.

Aviva: [laughs] Missed me!

There's lots of snow in these woods today.

Perfect for a snowball fight!

♪♪

Chris: Ugh!

[splat]

Koki: Hey! I'm not a target!

Aviva: [gasps] Sorry, Koki!

Koki: I'm almost done fixing this rocket thruster,

then I'll be ready to rumble.

But, I could use some extra hands.

Martin: At your service. Chris: Extra hands!

Koki: Actually, I could use some extra tiny hands.

Aviva: No problem.

Miniaturizer ready for action.

♪♪

Martin/Chris: Miniaturize!

♪♪

Aviva: Now you can help Koki!

♪♪

Four extra tiny hands at your service.

Koki: Awesome, so guys, grab those chips

and hold them in place while I laser them.

♪♪

Chris: Wah!

[click]

[zap crackle]

Koki: Uh-oh!

[beeping]

Aviva: Oh no!

[beeping]

Malfunction!

[rocket motors f*ring]

Martin/Chris/Aviva/Koki: Waaaaaooooohhhhhh!

♪♪

Jimmy Z: Where'd everybody go?

Martin/Chris/Aviva/Koki: Waaaaaooooohhhhhh!

Aviva: We're sh**ting clear around the globe!

Koki: Hang on, we're heading back down!

Chris: We're hanging!!!!

Martin: Waaaaaooooohhhhhh!

Martin/Chris/Aviva/Koki: Waaaaaooooohhhhhh!

Waaaaaooooohhhhhh! [splash]



Aviva: Where are we?

Koki: I have no idea.

Nothing works now. No GPS, no power, nothing!

Chris: And we have no gear!

No creaturepods!

No power discs!

Martin: Just the Miniaturizer.

Aviva: So, we're stranded in a faraway land!

Martin: More like a faraway ocean!

Chris: Hang on!...There!

I see land!

Aviva/Koki: Yay!

Aviva: See? Told you.

A faraway land!

Martin: Oh, you got lucky.

Koki: Luck is what we'll need if we're going to make it to shore

with these engines.

♪♪

Jimmy Z: I gotta find out where they are and go pick them up.

[beeping]

No delays!

[bear growling]

Huh?! I must be hungrier than I thought.

Ohhh, uh, hi...

Umm...

What's a little delay?

I can do this later.

Bear: [ROAR]

Jimmy Z: Ugh!

Ahhhhh!

A bear's taken over the Tortuga,

and I'm out in the cold!

Koki: Anybody see a clue where we are?

Aviva: Hmm.

Aviva/Koki: [gasp] Aviva: An owl!

Chris: Alright!

Aviva: Where do owls live?

Chris: They live on every continent in the world,

except Antarctica.

Martin: So that doesn't really narrow it down much.

Koki: It's true.

They live in North America,

South America, Europe,

Asia, Africa and Oceania.

They all have owls.

Aviva: Wow. Owls are a super successful group of animals.

Martin: Yeah, they live in all kind of habitats,

from icy tundra of the Arctic,

to deserts in Africa and South America,

all different kinds.

Aviva: Ok, well what kind of owl is this?

That'll tell us where we are.

Chris: There are about species of owl in the world,

so we're not exactly sure.

Martin: But, it looks big and powerful.

Aviva: Oh great. That's all you've got?!

Looks powerful?

Koki: Yeah, it's one of those rare powerful owls!

Aviva/Koki: [laughing]

Chris: It's after something!

♪ [exciting chase music]

Aviva: A koala!!

[gasps] But no, don't let it att*ck a koala!

♪♪

Nice escape, little guy.

Chris: Well, that explains where we are.

Martin/Chris: Australia!

Martin: And it also explains who the owl is.

Aviva: I thought you already ID'd it?

Koki: A "powerful owl", remember?

Aviva/Koki: [laughter]

Martin: It is. Aviva: It is what?

Martin: A powerful owl!

Aviva: No, its name.

Martin: Powerful owl.

It's actually named

the powerful owl!

Koki: You're kidding?!

Martin: [laughs]

No, it's true.

Aviva: Ugh. I hate when that happens.

You got lucky!

♪♪

Jimmy Z: Oh man!

He's moved in and taken over!

♪♪

Not you too!

No, not my cherry pie!

Chris: Okay, the Tortuga is here in North America,

and we're all the way over here in Australia,

so that means, we have a long journey home

and the Tortuga is damaged.

Koki: Well, we've got to work with what we've got.

Grab some tools and let's get started!

♪♪

[whirring sound]

Martin: Whew! Ha-ha-haa!

Chris: Alright!

Aviva: Whoo!

Martin: Then let the odyssey begin.

Aviva: Odyssey? What's that exactly?

Koki: It's a long journey home

and I'm sure it won't be easy.

Aviva: And won't go as planned.

Chris: And isn't that exciting!

Martin: Like I said, let the odyssey begin!

Martin/Chris: Wahoooo!

♪♪

[dolphins splashing]

♪♪

Chris: [inhales]

♪♪

Land ho!

Aviva: Huh?! Koki: [yawns]

Aviva: Really? Where?!

Koki: Let me see!

It is! It really is!

Home! It could be home!

♪♪

Okay...well, this doesn't seem like home.

Aviva: Nope, I doubt we'll see any familiar faces here.

Chris: Well that's a familiar face!

Martin: It really is a familiar face.

It's Hipster!

Yeahhh, hey Hipster!

Aviva: Aw Hipster.

It really is good to see you.

You're still as cute as ever!

Chris: And that makes us officially in Africa.

Martin: And his family is still as big and tough as ever.

Chris: We're floating straight towards them!

Martin: And that bull does not look happy!

[loud growl]

[loud splashes]

Aviva: Uh oh!

I wish we had the Hippo Sub.

♪♪

Martin: Don't move.

[loud splash]

♪♪

Chris: Oh no. Hippo att*ck!

[loud splashes]

♪♪

[loud splashes]

He's not sure where we went.

Martin's idea worked!

Aviva: Great thinking, Martin!

Martin: Ah yeah, I figured it was a job

for the swimming brother.

We're safe size now to sail right on through.



Chris: Um, not exactly.

This size isn't safe either.

Don't move! Stay still!

Koki: Huh?! Why is the guy who can't stop moving,

telling us to stay still?

Chris: Look up, it's an Owl.

Aviva: Uh oh!

Martin: Anyone else have an idea?

Chris: Duck!

Martin/Chris/Aviva/Koki: Ahhhhhhh!

[loud splash]

♪♪

Koki: A fish?!

Aviva: What kind of an owl catches fish?

Chris: [gasps] A Pel's fishing owl. That's who!

Aviva: Unbelievable!

An owl that eats fish!

Chris: Yeah, let's get back to normal size.

[zap]

♪♪

Pel's fishing owls are great hunters.

They use that incredible owl eyesight to catch fish.

Seeing tiny ripples on the surface of the water,

even at night!

Martin: Awesome catch!

Chris: And check out the eyes.

Owls have eyes the shape of cylinders.

Martin: Most animals and us too, have eye-balls,

so we can move it around like this.

Chris: But since an owl's eye are cylinders,

they can't do that.

Their eyes are fixed.

So, they turn their heads instead.

With their amazing ability to swivel their heads

about three-quarters of the way around.

We can't even come close to that.

Aviva: Amazing!

I had no idea there were so many odd owls.

It seems like our odyssey is an Owl Odyssey to be exact!

Martin: The Great Owl Odyssey!

I like it!

Koki: That's two continents and two amazing owls

I never knew existed!

Australia, with its koala-eating powerful owl

and Africa, with its fish-eating Pel's fishing-owl.

♪♪

Chris: Happy hunting!

♪♪

Jimmy Z: Um...okay, now you're really overstaying your welcome!

Huh?!

A great horned owl?

I don't remember inviting you either.

Martin: Great idea Aviva,

converting the rocket pod

into a hot-air balloon.

Aviva: Thanks! Hmm..

This coastline must be another continent.

But which one?

Chris: I'm guessing South America.

Koki: How do you know?

Chris: Cause there are some burrowing owls

living in armadillo holes.

Koki: But I thought burrowing owls lived in North America.

Chris: They're in South America too.

My favorite daytime owl!

Aviva: It's weird to think of an owl that likes daytime.

Chris: They're not the only ones.

Snowy owls from the Arctic like daytime too.

And the northern hawk owl.

But the burrowing owls are the best!

[owls hooting]

They're calling us!

[owls hooting]

Oh, I want to go to the owl!

Got to go to the owl! Aviva: No stop! We can't!

Chris: But I have to go... they're calling!

Ugh!

[struggle]

Aviva: Sorry Chris, you just can't answer

the call of the owl today.

Chris: Bro, help please!

They're burrowing owls!

Martin: I get it, bro.

Koki: Not so fast!

Miniaturize!

[zap]

Martin: Hey, what're you doing?! Hey, stop! Hey, hey, c'mon...

Aviva: You gotta understand guys, we just can't stop.

Koki: We gotta get home.

Need some help?

Martin: [gasps] Oh wow!...Look!

Aviva/Koki: Huh? Koki: What? Look at what?

Martin: Huh, were'd he go?

Aviva: He's trying to distract us.

Let's keep working.

Martin: Oh, amazing!

You barn owls fly so silently,

you're impossible to hear.

It's like you're not even there!

See? Nobody can hear you!

So I'm going to name you--

Nobody!

[chuckles]

It's those owl feathers.

With those soft downy edges, that muffle the sound.

Ho-ho, most birds make sounds when they fly.

[swishing sound]

But you owls fly without a sound.

Those special feathers give you the power

to sneak up on your prey.

To prey, it's like nobody is there.

Right, Nobody?

Ahhhh! Ugh! [thud]

Aviva: What's wrong with you?

Martin: Ugh, I was att*cked!

Aviva: att*cked by who?

Martin: Nobody!

Koki: Nobody?

Martin: Yeah, yeah, Nobody.

Aviva: It's gotta be somebody.

Martin: No, it's Nobody!

Koki: Then nobody att*cked you?

Martin: Yeah, Nobody did it!

Aviva: Okay, was it nobody or somebody?

Martin: Nobody.

Aviva: Ugh, nobody is no one!

Martin: No, it's Nobody.

There! That's Nobody!

Chris: Where's Nobody?

Koki: Well, I think they're both getting loopy.

We gotta get home, and fast!

[thunder rumbles] Uh-oh. The wind is whipping up.

[lightning strikes] Aviva: Oh no,

we've flown into a storm.

Koki: Hang on!!

Martin/Chris/Aviva/Koki: Ahhhhhhhh!!!!

Aviva: Uh-uugh! Where are we?

Koki: Well, we're back in the Northern hemisphere.

Brrrr! And back to winter!

Chris: Ah! The boreal forest. And--

A great grey owl!

[owl hooting]

♪♪

Aviva: That's a beautiful owl.

Chris: Oh, and their hearing is top notch.

Koki: But how? They don't even have ears.

See? This owl has ears.

That one doesn't.

Chris: Those aren't ears.

They're just longer feathers,

probably for appearance or camouflage.

An owl's ears are holes underneath the feathers.

And lots of owls, like the great grey,

have one ear higher up

and one ear lower down.

Aviva: That way sound reaches each ear

at slightly different times.

And the owl brain has special mapping capabilities

that can use those times to compute and pinpoint

exactly where the sound is coming from.

It's called triangulation.

Hmm, and I've got something I've gotta do!

Koki: I think I know what she's up to.

Chris: Yup, but what's Martin up to?

Koki: Yeah, I thought it was too quiet.

Chris: Koki, he was miniaturized, remember?

Koki: That means he could've been tossed anywhere

and we wouldn't know!

Chris: We gotta find my bro!

Martin: Well that was a crazy landing!

I think I'm really deep under the snow.

Oh! Hello, vole.

Nice tunnel you built. Uh, which way to the surface?

I'm right behind ya!

Chris: Keep digging, Koki.

Hey, pal!

Oh, you gotta love this face.

Koki: I do?!

Chris: Yeah, see how the feathers make an owl's

whole face the shape of a dish, like a sonar dish,

to collect sound and direct it to their ears.

Which are under there.

That's just another thing that make owls

deadly hunters of the night!

Koki: Deadly hunters?

Chris/Koki: Uh-oh! Noooo!

Martin!

♪♪

Chris: She hears something under the snow!

Koki: Is it a vole? Chris: Is it Martin?

Martin: Hey! What's happening?!

Chris/Koki: Nooo! Martin!



Martin: Yikes, another owl!

An Eurasian eagle-owl!

She's after us!

Is this how my owl odyssey endsssss?!

Koki: That other owl is massive!

Chris: Eurasian eagle-owls will eat anything,

even other owls!

Martin: Ahhhhh!!!!

Chris: [gasps]

Martin: Ahhhhh!!!!

Chris: Gotcha!

You're safe!

Martin: Thanks, but she isn't.

Chris: Oh, go, go, go!

Oh yes, she's outta here.

Koki: Eurasian eagle-owls are pretty impressive!

Martin: One of the largest owls in the world.

Chris: And a real predator.

Hunting deer, foxes, weasels, birds, hawks.

These owls are truly fierce.

Koki: Well, this rocket pod isn't,

it's officially demolished.

Now we're really stuck.

Aviva: Or not! Martin/Chris/Koki: Huh?!

Aviva: I've been so inspired by these owls,

that I've used the last bit of battery power in my MIK

to make one last disc!

It should have enough power to print the disc,

so...fingers crossed!

Print!

One Eurasian eagle-owl power disc!

Chris: Alright! Martin: Way to go, Aviva!

Chris: Looks like it's my size, bro!

Martin: Awww--

Chris: Insert Eurasian eagle-owl power disc.

Touch eagle-owl.

And activate owl powers!

♪♪

[zap]

Wow!!!

I feel strong, powerful,

and ready to fly!!

Aviva: Then let's head home!

Chris: Miniaturize!

♪♪

Climb aboard.

Martin: Hey, thanks for your help. I'll see you later!

Coming, guys!

Chris: Hang on!

♪♪

Koki: Jimmy Z!

Martin/Chris/Aviva: We're home!

Jimmy Z: Is that--?

Could it be--?

Yahooo!! It's you!

It's really you!!

Happy day!

♪♪

[zap]

But bad news.

There's been a takeover.

They moved in after you left.

Koki: Oh no!

Our home isn't ours anymore.

Martin: That's nothing that Eurasian eagle-owl powers

can't handle, right bro?

Chris: Let's find out. C'mon!

♪♪

Powerful talons!

Gotcha!

♪♪

Incredible eyesight and hearing.

♪♪

Silent flight.

♪♪

Party's over! Head home, everybody!

Martin: Not a sound.

Chris: Sorry, but you get the point.

Martin: We just need our place back.

Aviva: He'll be back asleep and happy in no time.

Jimmy Z: Home Sweet Home!

Martin: What an amazing Owl Odyssey.

It wasn't easy getting back, but

we learned a lot about owls

all around the world.

Koki: Like the koala-hunting powerful owl in Australia.

Aviva: I loved the Pel's fishing-owl in Africa too.

Chris: Don't forget the day-loving,

underground living, burrowing owls!

Martin: And the silent flying barn owls

we saw in South America.

Koki: And in the north of Europe and Asia

the great grey owl

and Eurasian eagle-owl.

Jimmy Z: And don't forget about the great horned owl

who visited the Tortuga, here in North America.

Martin: And those just scratch the surface.

There are about species out there.

Chris: What better way to search for owls than owl power!

Koki: Guys! We just got home!

Martin: The creature mission continues!

The search for cool owls never ends!

Chris: The Owl Odyssey continues!

Martin: So owls are one of the coolest groups of birds

in the creature world!

Chris: All owls share common owl features,

but each species has a special character and unique traits.

Martin: Let's go meet some more.

Chris: This is a Eurasian eagle-owl.

One of the largest and most powerful owls

in the entire world.

They're a relative of the great horned owl, but much bigger

and they live all over Europe and Asia.

These are the weapons of the owl.

The talons.

The gripping power of these feet is incredible.

Up to five times a human's gripping power.

They're so big and powerful,

these guys can even hunt red foxes.

Martin: Last winter we checked out the short-eared owl.

What a cool owl!

They love the open spaces.

That's where we found them.

And the amazing thing was, this owl roosts in groups

which is really unusual for owls.

You think of owls as a night-time creature, right?

But these short-eared owls,

they like to be active in daylight hours.

The early morning and the late afternoon.

That's when they're actively hunting.

One thing we found out, is when a short eared owl

catches a vole, it swallows it whole!

Chris: On that same trip last winter,

we saw another very different owl.

♪♪

This is a saw-whet owl. They are so cute!

They're one of the smallest owls in North America.

Saw-whet owls, of course, have an excellent sense of hearing.

That's because they hunt at night, when it's dark.

They can listen for their prey and they have adaptations

that are special for it.

They have what's called "asymmetrical ears".

So one ear is down lower.

The other ear is up higher,

and that helps them zero in on their prey.

No matter where in the world you live,

there are always cool owls to check out.

Martin: So get out in the wild

to meet your owl neighbours.

Chris: Keep on creature adventuring!

Martin: We'll see you on the creature trail!
