Cap. Johnny.

Hi. Hello.

Cap, what happened
to the coffee?

Sorry to say there isn't
anymore. I got the last of it.

That figures.

Oh, I thought you could
grab some in the field anyway.

I've got you down for some
fire prevention inspections.

I thought you might want to start at that
hotdog stand at Wilmington and Freemont.

Oh, yeah. That's
gonna be thrilling.

Station 51, Station 116.

Fire in the alley behind

cross street Whitley Avenue.

Time out, 10:10.

Station 51, KMG.

DISPATCHER ON
RADIO: 51, informant reports

toxic chemicals are
stored in a tanker.

Use caution.

Squad 51, this is Rampart.
Can you send me some EKG?

10-4. Transmitting EKG.

We're sending you a
strip. Vitals to follow.

Pulse is 160. The victim is
in extreme pain, Rampart.

This patient is in V-fib.

Rampart, we have lost the
victim's pulse. Beginning CPR.

We're defibrillating
victim, Rampart.

Rampart, we've defibrillated
victim. Decent sinus rhythm.

Administer 2 amps sodium
bicarb and insert an airway.

Start an IV, 51.
Lactated Ringer's.

Squad 51, continue monitoring
vitals and transport immediately.

We're on our way, Rampart.

It's back there. The
whole place is gonna go.

Hey, Mike, back up and
pull straight on through.

It's a... It's a fire.
It's back there.

All right. Okay, all right.

Are we too late?

All clear, Captain.
I think I got it.

Phyl, I told you to leave it
alone. You might've been b*rned.

Looks like spontaneous
combustion to me.

Probably one of my tenants
dropped some paint cans in.

That's why I only use
the number 10 dumpster.

Absolutely fire
proof. Right, Captain?

Right.

Of course, if your boys
wanna hose her down

that's fine with me.

You better hurry up, Captain. It
may go out by itself, you know.

Let's wash it down, Marco.

Hello, Engine 51,
we've a rubbish fire here

that's out on arrival.
Cancel other units.

Squad 51 available and
the same with Engine 51.

DISPATCHER ON
RADIO: Engine 51, 10-4.

All units responding
with Station 51 cancelled.

Oh, you want some
details for your log book.

I got my log book right here.

smoke in garage area.

Instructed Roger to put
building on Orange Alert.

Yes, that's very nice.
Thank you very much.

Cap, you know,

maybe Phylis might be good
for the 51's Women's Auxiliary.

What do you mean? She can
probably pass the captain's exam.

Watch out. You'll
make me feel insecure.

That wouldn't be hard.

Great. I mean, five guys
with full protective gear

just standing around
watching a woman put out fire

with a fire extinguisher.

Yeah, I guess it was
kind of an overkill.

Can you imagine what
would've happened

had we not cancelled
the truck company?

Yeah, we'd be hearing
about it for years.

There it is. Davey's Dogs.

Yeah, what a dump that place is.

It looks like it should have a
health department check-out

before a fire inspection.

I sure wanted a cup of coffee.

Well, maybe you can
take your chances.

Ah, lovely.

I think I'll wait
on that coffee.

Looks like nobody's home.

Hello!

Yeah, yeah, I'll
be right with you.

Hey. Hey.

You guys selling tickets to
the firemen's ball or something?

No, sir. No, we're not.

We're just here for a routine
fire inspection at your place.

Okay, help yourselves.
My name's Hobson.

Listen. I'm just
having a bite to eat.

You would like maybe a chili dog
or some fries while you look around?

No. No, thanks. We're fine.

Okay, well, whatever. I mean...

Listen, there ain't
very much to the place.

Just out here and
back here in the kitchen.

Yeah, we'll take a look.

Yeah, you do that. Whatever.

All right.

Yeah, well, is everything
okay back there?

Not so, Mr. Hobson.
I'm afraid it's not.

Yeah? How come?

Well, sir, you have some
non-standard wiring back there.

And all your circuits
are overloaded.

Oh, really. Well, I mean,
everything works okay.

Yes, sir, probably so. But you have
too much current going through there.

One spark from it and the
whole place could go up.

Uh-huh.

You got some frayed wiring
there by your deep-fry cooker.

And you got some gas
leaks over there on your stove.

And you got enough grease
in that flue to run a railroad.

Well, geez. You guys just
getting a little picky, ain't you?

I mean, after all.

It's the law.

We're just here to protect
you and your customers.

Okay, Mr. Hobson.

You have 14 days after
we give you this 410 citation

to clear everything up.

Then we'll be back
to check it out. Okay?

All right. I guess I have kind of
let things get a little run down.

But, you know, it would
cost so much to fix it.

You know what I mean?

Yeah, it could.

You know, I've been thinking
I might just sell this place.

You know, I mean, business
ain't been all that good anyway.

Is that right?

Yeah.

I got a brother up in Oregon.

He wants I should come
up and stay with him.

And I think I might do that
just as soon as I find a buyer.

Yeah, well, good luck.

Oh, hey, listen.

You don't know anybody who'd like
to buy this little gold mine, do you?

No, no, I don't think so.

Oh, okay.

Well, listen. Anytime you're
in the neighborhood drop by.

I'll make you some
chili dogs on me, okay?

Right, okay.

Yeah.

So long. See you later.

Yeah, whatever.

What a dump.

Really, it's a wonder we didn't
get a food poisoning run here.

I wonder who'd
buy a place like that.

A total idiot.

Squad 51, man injured.

2060 Martin Street,
cross street, Firestone.

2060 Martin.

Ambulance responding.
Time out, 12:26.

Squad 51.

Well, Mr. Jacobs,

he was fixing my lawn
mower. And then...

Well, he doesn't have a carotid.

No, carotid, Johnny.

No carotid?

No respiration.

Oh... Roy, look here.

Looks like a puncture wound.

Probably something thrown up
by the lawn mower over there.

Yeah, looks like it.

Rampart, this is Squad

Go ahead, 51.

Rampart, we have a male.

Approximately 30 years
old. He's comatose.

He has a puncture wound.
Right to the left of the sternum.

Looks like a projectile
from a lawn mower.

Do not use cardiac compression.

I repeat, do not use
cardiac compression.

Send me a strip as soon
as you have him patched in.

V-fib, 51. Defibrillate
immediately.

Is he all right?

Roy, we gotta transfer.

Wait a minute.

Okay, ready.

Wait a minute.

One, two, three, hit him.

All right, he's back
into sinus rhythm.

Rampart, the victim
is in sinus rhythm.

Strip coming your way.

I'll get his pulse.

Okay, I'll get BP on him.

Pulse, 120 and thready.

Respiration is 16.

What you got?

Okay.

I'll ready up an IV here.

Rampart, vital signs are

BP 90 over 60, pulse
is 120 and thready

and respiration is 16.

Give him two amps
sodium bicarb then oxygen.

Continue monitoring EKG and
transport as soon as possible.

10-4 Rampart.

Joe, can you give me a hand?

Sure, Kel. What's up?

Possible heart wound.

We may have to do a pericardial
synthesis or a thoracotomy.

Also a pericardial
aspirational treatment, too.

Okay, good. Dix, alert OR
for a possible heart injury.

Let's get changed, Doc.

Ambulance.

Okay.

Okay, we're patched up.

Okay.

He was helping me.
Such a nice man.

We got a pretty severe puncture
wound in the chest, here so...

Ready?

Can you wait a minute? One sec.

Ma'am, where does
he live? Do you know?

Upstairs. But his
wife isn't home.

She works and the
kids are at school.

Poor Mr. Jacobs.

He's been out of
work and now this.

He's gonna be okay. I
wouldn't worry about it.

Oh, I hope so.

I'll ride in with him.

All right.

Let's get his arm
straighter here.

Here we go.

Give you a hand. Yeah.

All set up, Dix?

The ORs are tied up
in that vehicle collision.

All right, we'll
use Treatment 2.

Set it up with thoracotomy tray.

Get me an anesthesiologist
down here stat.

Right away.

Rampart, the victim
regained consciousness.

Became agitated, then collapsed.

The pulse is 120 and thready.

BP is now 70 over 55.

His neck veins are distended.
There's a strip on the way.

Sounds like he's tamponadic.

Yeah.

His EKG is fairly normal
with low voltage complexes.

cardiac tamponade.

What's your ETA?

About two minutes.

with one milligram
isoproterenol and 500 ccs D5W.

10-4.

This is gonna be close, Kel.

You know it.

Treatment 2.

Okay, well, let's go. All right.

Neck veins distended
and the pressure's real low.

All right, get him to the
table as quickly as possible.

Okay. One, two, three.

Pericardial synthesis needle,
and let's prep his chest.

Doc, you need anything else?

No, go ahead.

Carol, start with
a liter of Ringer's.

His pulse is 150 and thready.

Blood pressure is 50 over

I removed 400 ccs of blood,

but the pressure
continues to drop.

He's still bleeding
into the pericardium.

Let's get his chest open.

Get an endotracheal tube in him.

Carol, no time to scrub, gloves.

Scalpel.

Sponges.

Rib retractors.

Sponge.

Pericardium is
distended and tense.

Pickups.

Scissors.

All right, get the
suction ready, Joe.

I'm gonna open the pericardium.

Pericardium is open.

At least another 800
ccs of blood suction.

Sponge.

All right, there it is.

Looks like a piece of nail.

Penetrated the pericardium
and the myocardium.

Pickups.

It was close. I think
he's gonna be okay.

Let's get that chest
closed. Sponge.

Sutures.

Exciting day.

Two runs, 10 fire
inspections and we blew lunch.

Yeah, I know what you mean. They're
all starting to run together in my head.

Except for that hot dog stand.

It's in a class all by itself.

Yeah, I wonder who he's
gonna stick with that place.

I mean, it's not much
of an investment.

What are you guys talking about?

Oh, we're talking about a big
business opportunity. Big, you know.

Yeah, really big.

Yeah. You know, Roy,
whoever gets Davey's Dogs is

really gonna clean up.

Yeah, well, they're gonna
have to clean up to clean up.

You guys got a chance
to buy Davey's Dogs?

Maybe. Why?

Oh, I just think the
guy has a gold mine.

A gold mine?

What do you mean, gold mine?

I stop there a couple of
times a week for breakfast.

Chili dogs, the best in town.

Breakfast.

Chili dogs?

Yeah. He's got a secret
recipe or something.

I don't know what it
is. It's good though.

We're talking about
the same place?

Yup.

That's four and one is five.

Five? What are you
doing? I gave you a 10.

Are you sure?

Yep.

Whose picture was on it?

I almost got you
there, didn't I?

Yeah, well.

Thanks.

Oh, I don't know if this
was such a good idea.

Oh, look. We had to eat
anyway for heaven's sake.

Besides, Chet said this
was the best chili dog in town.

Yeah. Well, Chet isn't
exactly a Cordon Bleu gourmet.

These are really good.

Fantastic.

Man!

Chet was right for a
change. These are incredible.

Man, whoever buys this
is gonna have a gold mine.

I think I just figured out what
idiot we were talking about.

Oh, come on. I'm serious.

Look, properly run, this
place could be a gold mine.

Yeah. A very
unsanitary gold mine.

But they do have good hot dogs.

They sure are.

I wonder who's on the 10.

Grant.

McCall... Yeah.

Where can I put him? He's
here from the jail detention.

What's wrong?

g*nsh*t wound.

I fell on some broken glass.
There was this dude sh**t...

Save it. This is a
hospital not a court room.

Come on, I'll show you.

Let's go.

Doctor in Treatment 1.

Listen, lady, you're
wasting your time.

I wanna go back to detention.

Don't give the
lady any problems.

Because nobody's
gonna open up my leg.

And nobody's gonna
take anything out of it.

Tell him not to touch me.
Nobody's gonna look at this.

What's the problem?

He was burglarizing
an auto parts yard.

The owner surprised him
and sh*t him when he ran.

We caught him after he
climbed over the fence

and collapsed in the alley.

I wasn't in that yard.

I was headed down the alley
when I heard the sh**ting

on the other side of the fence.

And I cut myself
when I hit the ground.

All right, un-cuff
him and wait outside.

No, Doctor...

Look, he's not
gonna go anyplace.

I'll show you
where you can wait.

All right, lie down.

I'm not lying down.

Look, I'm your doctor. Everything
you say to me is confidential.

Nobody can force me
to testify against you.

Now, lie down and let
me take a look at that.

So, we can see
what you're facing.

g*nsh*t wound.

Looks like a .22 caliber.

What happened?

I needed a new clutch and the
old man wouldn't give me credit.

I gotta keep my truck
running for my business.

Have you ever
been in jail before?

But they can't get me on
this one without the b*llet.

Looks like they got a
pretty good case against you

even without the b*llet.

It's the only
evidence they have.

Without it, it's just my
word against the old man's.

In couple of days, I'll
be fine. Out on detention.

You go back to detention
with this b*llet in your leg

and the only way you'll
come out is on a slab.

What are you talking about?

That b*llet's in the vicinity
of the femoral artery.

That's the one that carries
most of the blood to that leg.

I'm surprised you didn't
rupture it just walking in here.

You go back to
detention, I'm willing to bet

that b*llet will
sever the artery.

Fine. Then you can
treat me if that happens.

I'll take my chances now.

If that artery severs
it will be a gusher.

Chances are you'll bleed to death
before anyone could get to you.

You're trying to scare me.

No, I'm trying to help you.

That's raw exposed tissue
with a foreign substance in it.

Even if the artery doesn't sever

chances are it
will get infected.

And a few days later
you'll lose consciousness.

And then we don't need
your permission to treat you.

Only trouble is we'll
probably be taking your leg off

instead of taking
the b*llet out.

All right, Dix. I'll send
him up to observation.

Possible surgery.

And tell them to
immobilize that leg.

There's a foreign substance
positioned to sever a main artery.

I'll send for security and take care
of the paper work with the police.

Thanks.

Hey, wait. I would've paid the
old man for his parts. Honest.

Yeah, well, tell him
that. Tell the court that.

It's about time you started becoming
responsible for your own actions.

Will you wait?

Would you think
they'd listen to me?

I mean, believe me.

Well, you could
try. It'll be a start.

How soon... How soon
can you take the b*llet out?

I could take it
out this afternoon.

Thanks, Doctor.

I mean that.

I got a plan here

that will wipe that smug
look right off your face.

No, that's not
smug, it's mustard.

Look,

we have 18 guys
at the station, right?

They all pool their
money together...

We can have it and call
it Station 51 Enterprises.

How much are they gonna have to
put into this Station 51 Enterprises?

Well, as near as
I can figure out,

with your money and mine,
two or three thousand dollars.

You figured two or three thousand
dollars is gonna buy that place, eh?

Look,

all we have to do is get
a second mortgage on it.

Then that way we can come
up with the initial down payment.

Pretty smart, huh?

You know what the interest
is on the second mortgage?

Who's gonna run the
place, if you can buy it?

I'm coming to that.

We have 18 guys
at the station right?

Right.

Twelve guys are always off.

Right.

Okay.

What we do is we figure
out a work schedule.

We look at all
the guys' days off,

then that way not everybody has to
spend all their free time down there.

Gee, that's a great
way to spend a day off.

Roy, I don't
understand your attitude.

Do you wanna be a
fireman all your life?

Yes.

Don't you wanna
be a rich fireman?

I just wanna stop you
from making me poorer.

Boy, that's a bad attitude.

That's a real bad attitude.

Squad 51, baby with
difficult breathing.

1220 Hayward Avenue,
cross street, Lincoln.

120 Hayward Avenue.
Time out, 22:30.

Squad 51, KMG 365

Fire department.

In here. Hurry!

Oh, thank God you're here.

Okay, let me have her.
She's barely breathing.

All right, there you are.

Okay.

Okay, sweetheart. All right.

She was fine when I
gave her, her supper.

But when I went in just to check
on her she wasn't breathing and...

Okay, relax. How old is she?

She's 18 months last week.

All right. She had
a checkup then.

Rampart, this is Squad

Go ahead, 51.

She's got a respiration of 65.

Rampart, we have a
baby, about 18 months old

having breathing
difficulties. Respiration 65.

bodies aspirated.

Establish an adequate
airway for ventilation.

Don't wait for ambulance.
Transport immediately, Squad.

Do not wait for the
ambulance. 10-4, Rampart.

Wanna go to Peds? Right.

Peds right away. Okay.

All right, let me check here.

Yeah. She's okay, she's clear.

Right here.

Let's just slip this in.

Come on, sweetheart,
it's gonna be okay.

It's going okay, here we go.

We're gonna have to
take her to the hospital.

Is she going to be all right?

Poor baby. Watch it.
She may spit that back out.

Okay.

Don't let her spit it out.

Where are you taking her?

Rampart General. Do
you know where it is?

Yes, I do. I'll meet you there.

All right.

All right, you wanna
open this door for me?

Okay.

I'll be there in a minute.

All right.

You got her?

Let me put her down
this way. There we go.

Roy, she stopped breathing.

We're almost there.

Room 1.

Okay.

There we go.

Edema.

Wanna insert a pediatric and
a tracheal tube and ventilate.

Right, John, ventilate this.

Dix, let's give her two
milligrams dexamethasone IM.

How is she doing?

Color is better. Respiration
seems to be improving.

Let's hope this helps.

My baby, how is she?

Ma'am, this is Dr. Early,
he took care of your child.

She's dead?

Your daughter's not entirely
well, but she's out of danger.

We've got her on a respirator.

She's not dead.

Of course not.

Miss McCall will
take you upstairs.

You can see her
through the window.

Oh, oh, thank you.

Thank you both.

Oh!

But what went wrong?
I don't understand.

We don't either.

It happens to infants
from time to time.

Despite all the research,
why, we just can't explain it.

You're very fortunate.

Oh, I'm so grateful.

Now, if you'd
excuse me, I really...

Just follow Miss McCall.

This way. Oh, thank you.

I still think it's
a stupid idea.

Stupid idea? Are you kidding me?

Seventeen guys down
here. Seventeen names.

They don't think
that it's stupid.

How does it feel to be
the last big hold out, huh?

Look, just look at the names.

Read the names over and then

either you're in or you're out.

I'm out.

Roy, I can't believe my ears.
I mean, you gotta be crazy.

Roy... Cap, will
you talk to Roy?

Right. Roy... Yeah.

What am I talking to him about?

About the hot dog stand.

Oh, right, right. Roy,
it's a terrific idea.

It really is. It can't miss.

Even my wife thinks
it's a great idea.

She does.

Station 51. Station
Eight. Engine 15.

Structure fire at
the chemical plant.

5300 West Vermont.
Cross Street, Victory.

Time out, 08:15.

Station 51, KMG 365.

We got a normal pentane leak up
on the roof. It's burning pretty good.

Okay, evacuate everybody, get
them out the other side of the building.

Right. Come on.

Fire up on top,
we'll go with the pack

and two and a half above ground.

Stoker, you'll have
to mule a line back.

LA, Engine 51 at scene.

We have a normal
pentane fire on the roof.

Have Truck Eight set up for ladder
pipe operation on the west side.

Engine 51.

We're gonna have to
shut off that main valve.

Engine 80, Team 51. Shut
off the power to the pump.

Engine 15, Supply Truck 80, bring two
inch-and-a-halves to the roof on the east.

Hey. Cap.

Engine 51, Team

Okay, hold strong, hold strong.

All right, all right.

You stay with us, Roy.

All right.

The rest of you close
valves further down the line.

If the pressure backs up we
could get a rupture anyplace.

And if the pump doesn't get
shut down, it could ignite. Go.

Go on, Kelly.

Marco, why don't you catch
this? I'll get this down here.

Cap, we got a fire.
One of the valve's blew.

I got some on me.

John, you better stay here.

Engine 51, Engine 80 reports
that the power is now off.

All we can do is contain
this till the ladder gets set up.

LA, Engine 51. This fire is out.

All units out in 20 minutes.

Engine 51.

Is it okay if I can go
and check on Johnny?

No. Go on.

All right, thanks.

How you doing?

Okay.

Why don't you take this coat?

Okay, thanks.

Man, I thought I was gonna be
a human torch here for a minute.

Yeah. That would've
been quite a sight.

Yeah. I bet it would. Maybe
some other time okay?

Yeah, well, there's no hurry.

Look, I'm gonna get
back. We got it controlled,

so you can just take it easy.

All right. Well, are you
sure you don't need this?

No. No. Just relax.

Good morning, men.

Morning.

Morning, morning.

What's the matter with you?

Huh?

I said, what's wrong with you?

Nothing's wrong with
me. I feel just great.

And you wanna
know something else?

I want in on the deal.

You want in... Yep.

You do? Yep.

Joanne and I talked about
it last night and I was wrong.

I think it's a good idea.

You do?

Fantastic. Sure.

Great. Put your
John Doe right there.

What do you think, Cap?

About what?

About the hot dog
stand. He wants in.

About the hot dog stand.

Yeah.

It b*rned down last shift.

Oh, quit kidding around, Cap.

I wish I was.

Look, right there. Read it
and weep. A grease fire.

Place is a heap of
charcoal. A total loss.

Well, I guess this is the
end of Station 51 Enterprises.

Yeah.
