KIDS: Word World!

[croaks]

[whimpers]

[giggles]

[Narrator sighs]

NARRATOR: Spring is in the air.

The flowers are starting to bloom.

[sniffing]

And it's the perfect time for an elephant

to take a stroll in the woods.

Hi, Spider. What you doing?

Hi, Elephant.

I'm building a brand-new web.

KIDS: Web!

What a beautiful web!

Thanks, Elephant.

It's my brand-new home.

Home?

I just see a web.

My web is my home.

And I love my new home.

Now I have to go and get all my stuff to move in.

Will you watch my web while I'm gone?

Sure!

I'd be happy to.

NARRATOR: That's a big responsibility,

watching Spider's web.

I know.

Webs are really delicate and easy to break.

So I have to make sure no one runs into it.

DUCK: Incoming!

[screams, quacks]

[gasps]

Duck!

[grunts]

[quacking]

Oh, dear.

[sighs]

Oh, hello, Elephant.

[quacks]

Duck.

You broke Spider's web.

[grunts]

I did?

What? What web? Where?

It's gone now.

The letters blew away.

Oh, I'm sorry.

It was an accident.

I know.

But I was in charge of watching it

while Spider was gone.

That was her home.

Her home?!

[quacks]

Where's she gonna live?

I got to fix it.

I got to fix Spider's web.

Ah, good thing I got some letters here.

I'll make it just like new.

Huh?

Nothing's happening.

Um, uh, maybe, uh, this one goes here

and that one there and maybe a little bit of this and...

[gasps]

Oh.

Come on!

Build a web!

[groans]

[quacks]

Duck, the letters "J," "L," and "R"

aren't the right letters in the word "web."

Well, how am I supposed to know what the right letters are?

Well, you can figure it out if you listen for the sound

of each letter in the word.

After all...

♪ Letters stand for sounds, you know ♪

♪ Put sounds together, words will grow ♪

♪ Listen for each letter sound ♪

♪ And then we'll hunt the letter down. ♪

So, we want to build a w-e-b, web.

What's the first sound in the word "web?"

W-w-w.

And what letter makes the w- sound?

Oh, that would be "W!"

So let's find the letter "W."

Ha! Let's go!

[quacks]

That watermelon has a "W."

Oh, we can't take the "W" from your watermelon.

Sure, you can.

We have plenty of watermelon.

Watch.

All right, ants!

Ready, set, eat!

[burping]

Excuse us.

Here you go.

Oh.

That's mighty generous of you.

Okay, Duck, what's the next letter we need?

Web.

[gasps]

And what letter makes that sound?

Now, don't tell me, don't tell me.

Let me think.

The letter "E" makes the e- sound!

[quacks]

That's right!

Come on, Elephant!

Let's go find the letter "E" before Spider gets back.

NARRATOR: Duck and Elephant continued

to look for the letters in Spider's web.

They looked high for the letter "E."

Nothing up here, Duck.

[groans]

NARRATOR: They looked low for the letter "E."

No letter "E" under here.

NARRATOR: They even looked underwater for the letter "E."

Letter "E!"

Oh, letter "E!"

KIDS: Shell!

Hi-ya, Crab.

Hello, Duck.

What brings you to my watery wonderland?

Elephant and I are looking for the letter "E."

I broke Spider's web,

and we need the letter "E" to fix her home.

Have you seen one?

Ah, Duck, I have a letter "E"

right here, in my shell.

No, no, no, no, no.

We can't take your "E."

Don't worry, Duck.

There's plenty of shells in the sea.

[sighs]

The letter "E."

Thanks, Crab.

No problem, Duck.

I got the "E!"

Goody-goody-goody-goody- goody-goody, goody, goody!

Good-bye, Crab!

Thank you!

[sing-song]: I got the "E!"

Okay, Duck.

[gasps]

And fix Spider's web.

NARRATOR: Duck and Elephant marched off to Dog's house

to find the letter "B."

[barks, pants]

[growls playfully]

DUCK: Incoming!

Whoa-whoa-whoa, whoa!

Coming through!

[groans]

[quacks]

[barks, pants]

Hi, Dog.

Uh, sorry about that.

Um, I think your letters are a little, uh, crooked.

[grunts]

Oh.

[shudders, pants]

[barks]

Oh, uh, well, Elephant and I...

Uh, Elephant?

Elephant?

Where are you?

In here.

I'm stuck.

Oh! Hang on, Elephant!

We'll get you out!

[all grunting]

[grunting continues]

Oh...

[loud crash]

Oh!

[barks] Quack.

Dog, I broke Spider's web,

and that's her home!

I need the letter "B" to fix it.

Do you have the letter "B"?

[groans]

[gasps]: Do you mean it?

I can go searching in your pit for the letter "B"?

[laughs]: Well, all righty!

DUCK: Letter "B"? Letter "B"?

Letter... [gasps]

Gotcha!

Thanks, Dog.

Now I can fix Spider's web!

We'd better hurry, Duck.

Spider will be back soon.

All right, let's go!

See you, Dog! Thanks again!

Okay, Elephant, I'm ready to build the web.

[sighs]

[quacks]

But... I have the right letters.

Why can't I build a word?

Remember, Duck, you need to have the sounds in the right order

to build a word.

[sighs]

Oh, I couldn't have done it without Duck.

Oh... [laughs]

[quacks]

NARRATOR: By sounding out the letters,

Duck learned to build a word.

That's me! Guess what time it is.

It's snack time!

He's got lots of teeth, you know.

A sweet tooth means that you like to eat foods

that have a lot of sugar.

But too much sugar isn't good for you.

You might lose a tooth.

But I love my teeth!

Then have a listen to what this crab has to say.

♪ What you eat can make you stronger ♪

[laughs]

♪ I close the lid, and I can hide ♪

♪ From all the wind and rain outside. ♪

Uh... [clears throat]

Who's there?

[gasps]

Well, look at that!

Hello there!

[giggling]

I'm Duck.

D-U-C-K.

Duck.

And who are you?

I'm Caterpillar.

That's a very big name for a little WordFriend.

Nice to meet you, Caterpillar.

[quacks]

[gasps]: Ooh, what's that?

[laughs]: That's my home.

What's a home?

A home is where I live.

See, that's Log, that's where Frog lives.

It's his home.

And that's Barn, that's where Pig lives.

That's his home.

Hmm. Well, I suppose...

you don't have a home yet, Caterpillar.

But, ooh, I-I can build you one.

Sure! I know my letters pretty well, you know.

[sighs]: Huh, what kind of home is good for a caterpillar?

I-I don't know.

[groans]

Hm. Um, oh, Frog will know what kind of home you need!

He is one smart frog, Frog is!

Caterpillar?

Ca... Where'd you go?

I'm coming.

[panting]

[chuckles]: Wow!

You've got a lot of legs, Caterpillar.

But they're all very small, so I don't walk very fast.

Well, that's no problem.

I'll give you a lift.

We need to move fast and get you a home.

NARRATOR: So Duck and Caterpillar went to Frog's log

to see if he could help them find her a home.

Frog, this is my new WordFriend, Caterpillar.

Hi, Caterpillar.

You're an itty-bitty WordFriend, aren't you?

Pleased to meet you.

Pleased to meet you, Frog.

Caterpillar needs a home, Frog,

and you're always full of good ideas,

so I thought you could help.

Well... I am something of an idea expert.

Hmm.

[croaks]

I know-- a bag is a perfect home for a caterpillar.

Great idea, Frog.[quacks]

See, I told you Frog was good at those idea thingies.

[croaks]

[humming tune]

Frog, got any of them letters around here

to... to build a bag for Caterpillar?

Duck. Huh?

I have them right here.

Oh, what are those?

FROG: Hmm?

Oh, they're letters.

Each one of them has a sound.

And when you put the sounds together

you build words, like this.

KIDS: Bag!

Wow, a bag is the perfect home for me.

Okay, let's try out your new home.

Thanks a lot, Frog.

All right, you can live right here, Caterpillar.

We'll be neighbors.

That means we live next to each other.

[wind whistling]

♪ But should it blow away? ♪

Whoa!

[loud quacking] Oh, dear!

[gasps]

[chuckles] [gasps]

A laughing bag! Yikes!

DUCK: Incoming!

Caterpillar, Caterpillar!

Oh, my gosh! [quacks]

Where's Pig?

PIG: I'm here.

Hey, you're not my lunch.

Uh-uh.

I'm Caterpillar.

Hi there, Caterpillar.

for an itty-bitty WordFriend, isn't it?

Uh-huh.

Caterpillar is my new WordFriend, Pig.

I'm helping her find a home that will be just right.

We tried this bag.

But it blew away on the wind.

Well, then that bag isn't a very good home for you, is it?

Uh-uh.

No, sir.

You need a home that's heavier than a bag

so you won't blow away.

Well, maybe I can help you.

Oh, would you?

Let's see-- something heavier than a bag.

Hmm...

Say, what about a can?

Yeah, a can is a lot heavier than a bag.

We'll build Caterpillar a can.

It will be her new home.

[clinking]

and the lid will keep out the rain.
