ELINOR: "Backyard Soup"

ELINOR: Okay , we need to find all of the vegetables...

on this list.

ARI: Mmmm.

I love having dinner at your house, Elinor.

ELINOR: And tonight is a special treat.

ELINOR: We're having my favorite.

"Backyard Soup!"

ARI: Yay!

Wait a minute...

is that soup made from your backyard?

ARI: ...like leaves and mud?

Arrgh!

ELINOR: [giggle]

No, silly. It's vegetable soup,

but we call it backyard soup because we use vegetables

that grow in our backyard garden.

ARI: Whew!

That sounds better.

ELINOR: I think we got everything.

Peas, potatoes, cauliflower, carrots and radishes.

ARI: That's a lot of different veggies.

ELINOR: Mmm-hmmm.

My mom says these plants need a lot of water

to help them grow,

so it's good that it's been raining a lot.

ARI: And rain makes the ground so squishy.

Don't plants need sunshine too?

ELINOR: Yep, water and sun help plants grow big

and strong to make all these veggies.

ARI: ...that turn into our dinner!

BOTH: [giggle]

MR. RABBIT: Thanks for picking the veggies...

and helping to make the soup, kids!

[sigh]

ARI: Mmmmmmmm...

It's sooo good.

Can I have another bowl?

MR. RABBIT: A third bowl of soup?

Oh!

Of course!

ARI: Thank you!

Mmmm hmmm!

Can I come over for dinner again tomorrow?

RANGER RABBIT: [chuckles] You're always welcome, Ari.

But, tomorrow we are taking the train..

to visit Elinor's grandparents.

ELINOR: Yay! I love riding the train.

And I can't wait to see Baba and Bibi again!

ARI: Who are Baba and Bibi?

ELINOR: That's what I call my grandparents!

What do you call your grandpa and grandma?

ARI: Oh.

I call mine Grandpa and Grandma.

ALL: [giggle]

ELINOR: We have to take the train because they live...

far away, in a place called Desert Town.

ARI: Oh...

ELINOR: I haven't been there since I was a baby bunny,

so I don't really remember what it's like.

ARI: What are you going to do there?

ELINOR: Hmm...

I know!

I can show Baba and Bibi how to make Backyard Soup...

at their house.

ELINOR: If you loved it,

BaBa and BiBi are going to love it, too!

GRANDPA: How was your trip?

ELINOR: It was so fun!

I looked out the window the whole time.

GRANDMA: Well, I love riding trains...

and looking out the window, too.

You see so many interesting things!

ELINOR: Wiggle giggle.

GRANDPA: [giggle] Ah dear.

ELINOR: [giggle] Yeah!

I saw lots of big trees and bushes...

and then later I saw smaller plants.

GRANDPA: Well, what do you think of Desert Town so far?

ELINOR: I like it!

It's so different here.

GRANDMA: How so, Elinor?

ELINOR: Well, first of all, it's a lot hotter here.

[phew].

ELINOR: And I also noticed...

that the ground looks different.

ELINOR: There's almost no grass and the dirt...

doesn't look like the dirt back home.

It's so dusty!

At home the ground is wet and squishy.

GRANDMA: That's a great observation, Elinor.

GRANDPA: Welcome to the desert! [chuckle]

It's dry and hot here.

ELINOR: Hmm...

RANGER RABBIT: That means there's less...

water around, Elinor.

It doesn't rain as much in the desert,

so the ground looks and feels dry.

ELINOR: That is so interesting!

Well, dry or wet, I'm just happy to see you,

Baba and Bibi!

GRANDMA: Oh you're too much little buddy.

ELINOR: Ahhh!

Wow, I was thirsty!

GRANDPA: What would you like to do first, Elinor?

I want to show you how to make my favorite soup!

GRANDPA: You are going to show us how to make soup?

[giggle] This I gotta see.

ELINOR: Well, you'll have to help me with the cooking part.

But I'm going to get all the ingredients from your garden!

GRANDPA: Wonderful.

What's it called?

ELINOR: It's called Backyard Soup!

GRANDMA: Well, that is soooo interesting!

ELINOR: And delicious!

You'll see!

Which way is your garden?

GRANDPA: The backyard is through that door.

ELINOR: Ok, I'll be right back!

ELINOR: Wow!

ELINOR: Let's see, I need peas, potatoes, cauliflower,

carrots and radishes.

ELINOR: Ok, first: peas.

ELINOR: Hmmm...

oooohhhh...

Hmm, where are the peas?

ELINOR: I'll try the next vegetable.

Potatoes.

They have to have potatoes!

ELINOR: [sigh] No potatoes either?

[sigh]

ELINOR: [sigh]

GRANDMA: What's wrong, Elinor?

ELINOR: Your backyard garden doesn't have peas or potatoes...

or any of the veggies we need for Backyard Soup!

GRANDPA: Really?

None of them?

ELINOR: Not one!

All the plants are different.

I didn't recognize any of them.

ELINOR: Why don't the same veggies that grow...

in my garden at home grow in this garden?

GRANDMA: Well, I wonder...

what do you think is different about this garden...

and the one you have at home?

ELINOR: Hmmm, that's a good question!

ELINOR: Let's go find out.

We need more observations!

ELINOR: OK.

What's different here?

ELINOR: It's much hotter and sunnier.

ELINOR: And the ground is really dry.

That means there's a lot less water here.

ELINOR: Hmmm...

Maybe that's why the plants are different.

A plant that likes to drink lots of water,

and doesn't like a lot of sun,

might not grow very well here.

ELINOR: That's it!

Baba, Bibi, I think I figured it out!

ELINOR: The plants we have at home...

probably wouldn't like it here...

because it's really sunny and there isn't much water.

But I bet the plants here do!

GRANDMA: That's right, Elinor!

The desert gets more sun and less water.

GRANDPA: So the plants that grow here...

don't need as much water,

and they like having a lot of heat and sun!

ELINOR: [gasp] That's so interesting!

GRANDMA: Here, let us show you what we do grow...

in our desert garden.

GRANDMA: These are peppers...

ELINOR: Oh!

GRANDMA: and here are some beans...

and oh, this one is called squash.

ELINOR: Cool...

[sigh]

GRANDMA: What's wrong, Elinor?

ELINOR: Well, I'm happy that these plants like to grow here,

but that means I can't show you how to make...

my favorite soup.

None of the veggies in the recipe grow here.

GRANDPA: Well, Elinor, I think that the vegetables we have here

are different, but how you make the soup can be just the same.

ELINOR: Really?

You can make soup out of these vegetables?

GRANDMA: Why, yes!

And it's delicious!

ELINOR: [gasp]

Even those plants?

GRANDPA: Yes!

They're called cactuses, and they taste great in a soup!

Ow!
