I'm so glad to see you!

You're my favorite

ELINOR: Yum, that
berry looks yummy.

ELINOR: Bye, Chicky!

ELINOR: Oh, you're back?

Another berry?

You must be hungry.

RANGER RABBIT:
Elinor! Time to come in!

ELINOR: Coming Mom!

Bye Chicky!

ELINOR: Guess what, Mom.

I saw Chicky today.

RANGER RABBIT: Oh, your
chickadee bird friend?

How is she?

ELINOR: She's great...

But why is she still here?

RANGER RABBIT:
What do you mean?

ELINOR: Ms. Mole said birds fly
south where it's warm in winter,

because it's hard to find
food when the snow comes.

RANGER RABBIT:
That's true.

ELINOR: So why didn't
Chicky fly south...

like the geese
I saw today?

RANGER RABBIT: Well, not all
birds fly somewhere warm...

for the winter, Elinor.

Lots of birds stay
here, not just Chicky.

The ones that stay are the
ones who can find food.

Now, have a good
sleep, honey bunny.

I'll see you in
the morning.

RANGER RABBIT:
Sweet dreams.

ELINOR: But how is Chicky going
to find food with all this snow?

ELINOR: Uh-oh. That's the bush
where Chicky got the berries.

It's covered
in snow now.

ELINOR: Oh, hi Ari,

I'm looking for my
friend Chicky.

OLIVE: Oh, you mean
the little bird

with the pretty black
feathers in her head?

ELINOR: Yep, that's her.

OLIVE: I love her.

She's sooo friendly.

ARI: But don't birds fly
south in the winter?

ELINOR: Not all of them.

My Mom said some
birds stay here.

OLIVE: Ari, what
are you eating?

ARI: Sunflower seeds!
Want some?

KIDS: Sure!

ELINOR: I'm a little
worried about Chicky.

OLIVE: Why?

ELINOR: Yesterday I saw
her picking some berries

from that little berry-bush.

ARI: What bush?

I don't see any bush.

Just a lump of sno...

Ooooh, I get it.

OLIVE: Chicky's berry-bush
is covered in snow.

ARI: Yep.

Everything is
covered in snow.

OLIVE: Then how is Chicky
going to find berries?

Or any kind of food?

ELINOR: My mom said birds
that stay here can find food,

but I don't see how they can
do it with all this snow.

OLIVE: Huh.

ELINOR: I know!

I'll get my binoculars, and
we'll see if we can find Chicky.

We need more
observations!

OLIVE: So how do birds
find food in winter?

ARI: Maybe they
order pizza.

OLIVE: Mmmm, I don't
think birds have phones.

ARI: Right, good point.

OLIVE: I know.

Maybe they put their food
in lunch boxes, like we do.

ARI: Maybe.

But how would
they carry them?

They're way too big.

OLIVE: You're right.

Maybe they have
backpacks.

ELINOR: Look!

I see something
fluttering in the trees!

OLIVE: Let's go
check it out.

ELINOR: C'mon!

ELINOR: Over there!

Those birds are
eating some berries.

KIDS: [laugh]

OLIVE: And that bird is pulling
some bugs out of the tree.

KIDS: Wow! Cool!

ARI: And look those birds are
eating seeds from a sunflower.

ARI: [munching] [giggle]

OLIVE: [giggle]
ELINOR: C'mon!

OLIVE: Wow. Winter
Birds find food...

in all kinds
of hidden places.

ARI: [munching]
Anywhere they can.

ELINOR: That is
so interesting!

But what about
Chicky?

We still don't know where
she's getting her food.

[Chicky chirping]
ELINOR: [gasp]

ELINOR: That's chicky!

I know it's her because
she always goes...

Chick-a-dee-dee-dee-dee!

C'mon!

ARI: There she is!

OLIVE: What's she doing?

ARI: I'll take a
closer look.

ARI: Hey!

There are seeds and
berries inside this tree.

ELINOR: I'll bet Chicky
put them there.

I saw her flying off with
berries in her beak yesterday.

OLIVE: Smart Chicky!

It's like her own little
tree lunch box...

so I was sorta right.

ARI: So that's how she gets
food during the winter.

When she's hungry she just goes
to the tree and gets some.

B-uut I noticed there weren't
many seeds in that hole.

ELINOR: Uh-oh.

What if Chicky runs out of food
before the end of the winter?

OLIVE: I know!

Let's give her some of
our sunflower seeds...

ARI: Great idea.

OLIVE: Here you go Chicky,
some nice seeds for you.

[Chicky chirping]

OLIVE: [low gasp]

KIDS: [gasp]
Whoa!

OLIVE: She landed on me!

She landed on me!

I can't believe
Chicky landed on me!!

ELINOR: Let's go
tell my Mom!

OLIVE: [giggle]

ELINOR: ...and then we
saw birds looking for food

in all kinds of cool
places, Mom.

ARI: Like bugs
inside trees...

OLIVE: And leftover
apples...

RANGER RABBIT: Yep, it's
tricky but birds who stay here

in winter find food
anywhere they can.

That's called foraging, when you
look in all kinds of places.

Like when Chicky foraged
for sunflower seeds

on Olive's trunk!

KIDS: [giggle]

ELINOR: Wait a minute, I know
how we can help Chicky.

Let's build bird-feeders so
Chicky and other birds

can get more
food in winter.

ARI: But what will we
make them out of?

OLIVE: I know, let's
"forage" around the house

and look for things we can
use to make bird-feeders.

RANGER RABBIT:
That's a fabulous plan!

Forage away, kids!

[♪♪♪]

KIDS: ♪Let's feed
the birds. ♪

♪ Winter is snowy so,

OLIVE: ♪Chicky
needs a feeder ♪

ARI: ♪We'll build
her something great ♪

ELINOR: ♪From things we

ARI: ♪A paper plate! ♪

ELINOR: ♪We'll build
a birdfeeder... ♪

ARI: ♪And when our
work is through. ♪

of food to eat. ♪

ELINOR: ♪And all her
friends will too! ♪

KIDS: ♪Let's feed the birds.

ELINOR: You made a milk carton
into a birdfeeder house...

That is so smart, Olive!

OLIVE: Oh, this isn't
just a house...

ARI: It's a
birdfeeder library!

Nice!

OLIVE: This way the birds
will have something to read

while they have
a snack!

KIDS: [giggle]

ARI: I made a flying saucer bird
feeder from two paper plates.

The top plate is the roof,
and the bottom plate...

is for the seeds...

Beep-boop-boop-beep.
Beep-beep-beep-boop.

Beep-boop-boop...

Take us to your
birdseed.

OLIVE: [giggle] Let's
see your birdfeeder, Elinor.

ELINOR: Here it is!

OLIVE: It looks just
like Chicky's tree!

ELINOR: I made it out of
a paper-towel roll.

You just pour the
food in the top...

and it comes out this
hole on the side.

ARI: Cool!

There sure are lots of different
ways to make a birdfeeder.

OLIVE: Hmm...

Now we just have to
fill them up with food.

Ari? Can we have some of
your sunflower seeds,

pleeeease?

ARI: Sure thing!

Uh oh.

We ate them all.

OLIVE: Oh no!

Now what are we
going to do?

RANGER RABBIT: [giggle]
Hmmm, sunflower seeds, eh.

ELINOR: Mom! You have
a secret hiding place!

OLIVE: Just like Chicky.

KIDS: [giggle]

ELINOR: Thanks, Mom.

What else do birds
like to eat, Olive?

OLIVE: Uhhh, apples.

RANGER RABBIT: I have
some apples right here.

I'll cut up some slices.

OLIVE: And bugs!

RANGER RABBIT: Sorry, kids.

No bugs in my kitchen.

KIDS: [laughter]

ARI: There we are...

Wooo-hoo!

OLIVE: Perfect.
Nice work Ari.

Hmm..

Now all we need is...

[bird chirping]

ELINOR: It's Chicky!!

[Chicky chirping]

OLIVE: Look! She's using the
birdfeeder you made, Elinor!

ELINOR: And so are
all her bird friends!

ARI: Take as much food
as you want, birdies!

OLIVE: We made these
special bird-feeders...

from all the stuff we
foraged around the house.

ARI: Uh-huh.

That's right,
we foraged.

[stomach growl]

Wow, watching those birds
makes me huuuungry.

OLIVE: Maybe we should
build an Ari-feeder next!

KIDS: [giggle]

how do chickadees keep

They don't have winter
coats or fur like us.

SENOR TAPIR: You
know what, Elinor,

a scientist named Richard Hill
had the same question.

ARI: My favorites
are the ones...

And then they
ask questions..!

And then they
discover something!

SR. TAPIR: Ha ha!

Yes, isn't learning
about scientists fun?

I'm so glad you
like them.

And I love playing and sharing

for me to leave Animal Town.

KIDS: What? Why?

KOA: That's a bummer.

ELINOR: You're leaving?

SR. TAPIR: Yes, tomorrow
I'm sad to say.

Now that winter is coming,

it's time for me to
go to another town.

ARI: To another town?

OLIVE: But... why?

SR. TAPIR: Well, it's
my job, you see.

I'm a traveling musical
instrument sales-animal,

and my job is to go from
town to town playing music

and sharing these wonderful
instruments with everyone.

Why don't we do something
special for Sr. Tapir

before he leaves?

OLIVE: Great idea, Elinor!

He's always doing
nice things for us.

We should do something
nice for him.

But, what
should we do?

ARI: Hmm...

RANGER RABBIT: Hi, kids.

You look like you're trying to
figure something out.

ELINOR: Mom, Sr. Tapir
is leaving tomorrow.

RANGER RABBIT:
Yes, I heard.

I bet you kids
must be sad.

OLIVE: Yeah, we're really
going to miss him.

ELINOR: Mom, we want to give
Sr. Tapir something special.

RANGER RABBIT: That's
very sweet of you, kids.

I'm sure you'll find just the
right thing to give Sr. Tapir

before he leaves
tomorrow.

ELINOR: I hope so.

OLIVE: It's gime

what those sounds are.

ELINOR: I heard an interesting
sound outside that woke me up!

RANGER RABBIT: Hmmm.

What kind of
sound was it?

ELINOR: I don't know!

I want to go outside
and find out.

That's the sound

RANGER RABBIT: That is
an interesting sound.

What do you
think it is?

ELINOR: I don't know.

I don't think I've
ever heard it before.

[bird singing]

ELINOR: There it is again.

I think it's coming
from over there.

RANGER RABBIT: I
think you're right.

[♪♪♪]

[bird singing]

ELINOR: Look, it's those
birds in the tree

that are making
the sound.

RANGER RABBIT: Mm-hmm.

Those are Wood Thrushes
and Magnolia Warblers.

ELINOR: But Mom, I've
never heard a bird

make those sounds before.

Birds usually sound
like chirp chirp...

chirp-chirp-chirp chirp
chirp-chirp-chirp.

These sound more like
cheep cheep cheep cheep.

I wonder why do these
birds sound different?

RANGER RABBIT: Keep
observing, Elinor,

I think you might
find out soon.

[bird singing]

ELINOR: Wow, look at that
all those birds leaving.

It looks like they're all
going the same way.

ELINOR: [gasp] Mom, are the
birds leaving for the Winter,

like Sr. Tapir?

RANGER RABBIT:
Yes, they are.

They're migrating.

You see, some birds
don't like the cold,

so when it's almost Winter, they
fly away somewhere warmer.

ELINOR: Migrating...

RANGER: Yes, these birds are
on their way there now.

ELINOR: [gasp]

Is that why they are
making that special sound?

Because they're on a trip?

RANGER RABBIT: Yes!

Some birds make a
special sound, or call,

when they're flying
together for the winter.

[birds singing]

RANGER RABBIT:
What's wrong, Elinor?

ELINOR: I'm just a little sad
that the birds are leaving,

just like Sr. Tapir.

RANGER RABBIT: Oh,
don't worry, Elinor.

The birds and Sr. Tapir will
come back again next year.

Sometimes things
in Nature leave,

but then they come back.

ELINOR: Yeah.

It's nice that the birds
make special sounds...

when they go on a trip.

RANGER RABBIT: Mmhm!

ELINOR: Mom, that's it!

I think I know what we can give
Sr. Tapir before he leaves.

C'mon!

MR RACCOON: Well,
have a good trip, Sr Tapir.

Here, I baked you some
fresh snacks for your trip.

SR. TAPIR: Wow, thank you,

ELINOR: Well, we were trying to
think of what to give you.

OLIVE: Because you're always
singing fun songs to us.

ELINOR: And then I heard an
interesting sound outside

that woke me up.

OLIVE: Yeah, Elinor
told us all about it.

It was birds, and they
were leaving too.

ARI: And when they
leave for the winter,

they make a
special bird call.

SR. TAPIR: That's
so interesting!

ELINOR: Yes it is!

So we had the idea to
make a special song...

for you for your trip.

Just like the birds
have a special call

when they go on a trip.

SR. TAPIR: How
wonderful, kids!

I can't wait
