CHRIS:
We're here off the coast
of Africa,
on a large island
called Madagascar,
the land of unusual creatures.
Hey, it's us,
the Kratt Brothers!
I'm Chris.
I'm Martin,
and here in Madagascar,
lemurs are just about
everywhere!
We've got sifaka lemurs,
red-fronted brown lemurs,
sportive lemurs!
In fact, there are lemurs
in all different habitats,
all around the country.
But the question is,
who eats these lemurs?
What animal is the top land
predator on Madagascar?
Is it a member
of the dog family?
Like a wolf?
Coyote?
Or African wild dog?
Nope.
No members of the dog family
ever made it to Madagascar.
Is it a member
of the cat family?
Like a cougar?
Or a lion?
Or a jaguar?
No.
No big wild cat ever prowled
this island.
The top predator on Madagascar
is the fossa.
A.K.A.
Cryptoprocta ferox.
A predator found nowhere else
but on Madagascar.
A lemur-hunting
specialist.
Agile and quick
in the trees.
And on the ground.
The fossa is a predator
like no other.
With keen senses,
sharp teeth,
and an athletic build,
the fossa is actually
a relative of a mongoose
that has taken the form
of a large, cat-like predator.
Anything from mouse-lemurs
and chameleons,
all the way up to large lemurs,
is considered prey
for the fossa.
Lemurs may seem un-catchable,
but when a fossa
springs into action,
he can leap and glide
through the treetops
like no other predator
on Earth.
Imagine if we had the
tree-climbing speed
and agility of the fossa!
Imagine if we had
fossa power!
